is there a place or way of identifying hardware though you don't know the manufacturer?

BTW it was a gimme from an older system from a relative...they don't have an idea

See if it's got an FCC ID number written somewhere... then head over to http://www.windrivers.com and do an Advanced search using that. If you can find a model # sometimes that will give you a clue to the manufacturer as well.
