You can probably get away with making your own makeshift box, but if you go to a Fedex store they have laptop-specific boxes with lots of padding; same kind that companies use to have you send a laptop in for service. I'd say the box runs about $20 or so, but depending how much the laptop is worth that's a small price IMO
