i have access to a ton of gear cheap - i tried to look at going to marantz for a smaller setup. but i'm now not sure that is the ideal rig for me.
Can you use an HTPC in a box- keep the speakers i've hung/wired (back 3 mainly) and replace with a combo blu-ray/3d/netflix/whatever amp'd with RCA line sub out?
Right now i'm rocking dvi out since the GT220 doesn't have hdmi sound - i have a HD 5450 that does displayport or hdmi - and then a wii.
so honestly i can direct connect the wii to the tv if need be. the HTPC is the quad core in a nice antec microfusion 350 - 2.5 to 3+ ghz seems to have no problem soft-decoding 4K video so it's going to be a long term (5+ years) htpc. Now that hibernate works with 7media center - well i don't care that the ROKU uses 6 watts because if i'm going to get a nice plasma i'm not that green of a tv person myself. lol.
Back to original question:
The Sony HTIB is odd 6.1 - DTS EX/PCM 96/PCM 88/DD5.1 - it upconverts the sound or passes through the raw-bitstream.
But we've got TRU-HD and DTS-MA that i should consider.
Cost on a rig with cheap speakers (throw in trash) prob $100-200 at my discount - quite good - the main thing is the ability to take input video and not screw it up? sending it back to tv.
Or have a TV that can take input HDMI and output audio HDMI. or jailbreak the TV 😉 but the old Westy 42" is still rocking out thanks to this forum hot deals 5 years ago. Just noticing how crappy the panel is with 1080P and my eyes are getting worse so i need some Viera love.
Honest i see no reason other than "Backup" for on-board playing (netflix tv,netflix blu-ray). the pc is far more adept at all online services since it has the mojo built in.
The main thing i'm worried about is the video and sound transport - loudness control - decent 5.1 (i have a kid now i never go past volume 5 on the current 100 watt sony HTIB). It works - no glitches - no hangups - toslink - but the damn sony tuner is 7" tall and puts out heat like a mofo -
the key here is slimline - multifunction - cheap - keep existing speakers if possible.
Any thoughts on how bad of an idea this is? i do not plan to use blu-ray but you never know. i have a laptop with blu-ray for 1 year and have never used it. It's easier to rip and play honestly to keep a consistent (XBMC/7MC) user experience than have another player necessary. Of course when legal only. which is why i have no blu-ray media and have never seen one.
