I have someone else's laptop in my posession and that person has mine.

I was flying home around 5:30 am last monday Oct. 12 checking my notebook computer thru TSA at Dulles Airport just outside Washington DC.

When I got home, I opened my notebook bag and pulled out the laptop. I was trying to plug in the ac adapter but I noticed that the plugs were different.

When I opened the laptop to start up the OS, I realize that this is NOT my laptop.

I have already contacted the Lost and Found with the TSA people at Dulles airport. Their automated recording said that if nothing is found, they would not contact me.

What should I do? Should I contact Lenovo to see if I can get them to help me contact the rightful owner using the serial nos. on the back of this machine?

Any suggestions?

See if you can open up their Outlook and look at the e-mail signature. If there is a password, you can boot the PC into safe mode, log into the Administrator account (provided there is no password) and then remove the password from the user account.

The thinkpads look almost exactly the same but I did fireup his/her laptop only to come to a bios password lock so I am dead in the water. Should I file a police report?

Do you have a desktop computer in which you could hook the hard drive up to? SATA on laptops is the same as on desktops.

Crack it open and reset the hard way. 😉

This is probably the best bet and the first thing you should try.

I saw you considering filing a police report but I wouldn't go that route just yet as there's no actual evidence that any crime has been committed here. I'm sure the guy with your laptop is probably just as befuddled and frantic as you are and is probably actively seeking some way to find you as well.

If contacting Lenovo is unsuccessful, can the BIOS password be cleared by removing the CMOS battery for a while or switching the clear jumper? This may clear the BIOS password lock allowing you to load up the OS but then you'll probably be presented with the OS password prompt.

Ultimately what Sasiki said about removing the hard drive and connecting it to your PC may be the thing you end up having to do and hope the volume is not encrypted. Just don't let on to the owner that you did this especially if it turns out to be a Government laptop or you could be in a bit of a sticky mess even though you were only trying to do the right thing and find the owner. I'd only do this as a very last resort.

This thread is just begging for a parody. I'd do it but I really need to get some sleep, gotta get up for work in 4 hours. Don't let me down ATOT.

get Lenovo to contact him asap

value of laptop is not the retail price but all the priceless info and hard work usually found on one.. he needs his and you need yours for sure

Hey buddy, want to make a clean swap? I got this nice Lenovo the other day...and..well..it had a virus on it as well. Think you might be interested.

Look me up on Craigslist!

Bay Area. 😉

TSA from Dulles airport contacted me. I had to explain how they thought the laptops were switched and they later told me that no one called them if a laptop was exchanged/missing/lost on that fateful day. I told them if I don't hear from them in a week, I am the new owner. Can anyone PM me to set up this laptop so I can nullify the initial bios password or am I asking for "time out"?

I am more inclined to keep the laptop since I have nothing important on mine.

Here's the question I have... Did you get the better end of the deal? (Is your new t60 better than your old r51?)
