I have serious problem with my external HDD

I have @ my office a laptop Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 1630A (3700+ amd64)
I have bought before 4 months an external usb2.0 hdd (separate case[vipower] and western digital 80gb/8mb ide hdd)
Everything was fine (only sometimes windows couldn't find the ext hdd for some seconds) till last week.
I have major problems:
a)the hdd is in idle state(freezes) everytime i try to move a file (even 5Kb size) from one folder (inside the ext. hdd) to another folder (inside the same ext. hdd).
b)when i try to burn some files from the ext. hdd to the DVDR (before this week i did it many many times) i got after 5-6-20% Error Reading with nero .... (everytime)
c)the transfer of files from the ext. hdd to the main hdd (in laptop) takes TOO much time ....
d)The jumber for slave/master/cs etc in the ext hdd where should be? (my laptop has a hdd and a dvd)

please help me because i am desperate and cannot use normally my ext hdd !!!

The drive in the external box should be set to "master", unless the instructions state "cable select".

Have you tried unplugging the drive while Windows is running, powering down the drive, powering it back up after 10-15 seconds, and plugging it back in?

many times and nothing special happened
also, some files cannot be transfered (moved or copied) since they 've been on this hdd (eg I download them in the Main Hdd and then I transfer them to the ext hdd. Now, I need to burn a dvd with all these files but as I said i cannot do it using my ext hdd.So i try to move all of them back to my Main Hdd temporarly. Some files cannot be moved though!)

any ideas?
