I have Sennheiser HD580's w/o Amp

Topic pretty much says it all. I've had my Sennheiser HD580's for about a year and a half now but I've never tried them with an amp. I have them just plugged into my Audigy 2 on my gaming machine in sig. If I buy an amp will I notice an improvement in sound quality playing games like Quake 4 online?

Thanks all!

You'll get a much, much better answer to this question at Head-Fi. Owning the 580's myself, I know that they respond very very well to an amp, but how much that matters to you for gaming is hard to say.

HD600 (similar but more resolving than the HD580) are supposed to respond quite well to quality amplification.

That being said, it might be better and cheaper just to get a different set of headphones dedicated to gaming that don't require an amp and mate well with the analog output of your current sound card.

EDIT: have you thought about Sennhesier's PC-150 headset wtih mic. They're usually under $40 at Amazon and are supposed to be quite good for gaming (mic has very good vocal clarity and they're very comfortable to wear).
