I have run into a problem

While trying to help a friend with his computer I have run into a problem I can't resolve. I have lost system update and system restore.
What I want to do is reinstall the install disk that came with his Dell 2400 but when I try it gives me a warning that since the current [ on disk ] XP is newer It won't allow me to reinstall.

If you are able to backup all data first to an external drive, i would format the hard drive first, then you should be able to install. Do you have an "genuine copy of windows" or a restore disk ?OR you could install a new OS depending the specs of the machine.

No it,s the disk that comes with the Dell software. It says re installation.

The Dell disk will restore to original factory condition. If XP, that is a boatload of updates! Best start with a blank formatted HDD. Losing System Restore, etc., could indicated serious malware infection. Maybe time to upgrade to 7 or a Linux distro.

If you have things backed up, you can press Ctrl+F11 on the blue-topped Dell screen that appears immediately after post and perform a Factory Reset.
