Heh, well I have received all my components and i'm ready to build!..
Wait a second, theres only one thing missing, the HSF! It is still being shipped, prolly another 2 days before it arrives. Ah man! this is getting boring.

here are the components i have recieved:

Cpu: AMD T-Bird 1.4GHz/266 FSB 161.00
Motherboard: Epox EP-8K7A AMD761 DDR 120.00
Ram: Crucial PC2100 DDR 2x256megs 90.00
Video Card: MSI GeForce 2 Pro 64mb DDR w/TVout 142.00
Case: AOpen HQ-45 (spray paint dark blue) 60.00
Power Supply: Enermax 350W ATX EG365P-VE 55.00
DVD-ROM: Pioneer 16x 106s 16x SLOT 60.00
CD-RW: HP-9300 10x4x32x 70.00
HDD: Western Digital 60Gig 7200 RPM ATA/100 100.00
Monitor: Sony CPD-G420S 19" 420.00
Speakers: Klipsch 2.1 160.00
Soundcard: Sound Blaster Live! Value pci
HSF: Thermaltake Volcano II 8.00
==============================================================

Question: Can I begin putting the system together: install the motherboard in the case, hook up all the power and cdroms etc.. put in all the pci devices... install the cpu on the mobo, and just wait until the hsf arrives and then attatch it while the mobo is hooked up?

or do i have to install the hsf while the mobo is out of the case?

Thanks for your help.

You can put everything together, but I wouldn't put the motherboard in untill you've got the heatsink. It's possible to put the HSF on with the 'board in the case, but I wouldn't do it.

Trust me, the "time saved" isn't worth a broken motherboard or cracked core.

you can put in ram, cpu, graphics card, sound card...

edit: oh yea, and it is a good idea to put the heatsink on before you put the mb in the case.

hmm... I've always put the HSF on the cpu when the mobo is in the case.... never had a problem before. I guess I just have skillz. ;)

ok what will i need to do to install the hsf

just squirt the thermal compound all over the front of the AMD cpu... all over the black thing, or just the core?

then i glue it to the heat sink...... ?
do i have to slam that heat sink on their before the compound drys.... with a screw driver to slip the notch or something
hehe

I would suggest putting the Volcano II on before putting it in the case. From my experience, the Volcano II has been the trickiest hsf I have had to install to date. Very prone to screwdriver slippage.

The compound is not an adhesive or a glue it is only for thermal transfer. It does not glue the HSF to the CPU. You only need to put the compound on the core. Avoid getting it on the rest of the chip. Wipe any that gets on the chip off with a q-tip. Apply it evenly across the core (a razor blade helps).

ok so just put it right on the central spot with the little rectangle black shiney object with AMDblah lettering on it (the core) ?

just directly on top of the core, and not on the sides or around it, and then i apply the heat sinc onto the board and firmly press...

how much compound do i apply, what if it squirts out the sides. hehe
