i started working at publix about a week ago... worked four days so far not counting the orientation and such

the thing is... i have to go to L.A. since my mom is moving there on July 29th until August 11th...... so me and my sis have to go with her... and i have to give them at least a week early notice i think.

i seriously have no choice but to go.. plus i've been lookin forward to go to the westcoast since the summer started. I know i should've thought of this before i applied at publix but the family needed money and we didnt think we were gonna go. But my grandparents sent us money so she is moving there... I'm coming back here of course. What should I tell my manager? I know he wouldn't be happy but would he understand?

also, we are going to drive there non-stop except maybe a day or two at a cheap motel.... so it should take about 5 days to reach L.A. (driving from central FL)

me and my sis are taking a one way plane back to the nearest city. I should be back by august 11th.

Why do you have to go? To help your mom move? It sucks that you started a new job and then this comes up. Just tell your boss the situation. I'm sure he will understand.

Good Luck.

we have to take turns driving.. she is taking her car, she is going to need her car there... i don't think she can drive there all by herself. Plus, I've never been to the westcoast... im looking forward to it. It'll be my mini vacation for the summer before school starts

Uh, go to Cali, stay in Cali, get new job in Cali, problem solved.

You must tell your boss (in a voice imitating that of the Evil Cat in Cats and Dogs) "You stay here...because I hate you! That is all! Cats Rule!" then walk-out...

If you're driving non-stop, it shouldn't take 5 days to drive to L.A. I drove from Miami to L.A. in about 3 days, driving 12 hours a day.

uh.. because i want to go.
there is no way I am going to pass up going to L.A. just so i can work at publix getting 6.50 an hour. I enjoy working there and want to stay working there for now but it's not the most important thing in my life right now.

Driving 9AM-10PM from Kissimmee (for example) to LA will take just about exactly 3 days. You'll need to account for meal/fuel breaks on top of that.

Except you said you had no choice to go, which is a lie. If it's your CHOICE to go, then tell your boss and be done with it. But don't pretend you have no choice when you do.

well anyways... referring back to my first post... would it be better to tell him that there's a marriage I have to attend or illness in the family or another? hmmm oh well.....

That's pretty irresponsible. It's not just $6.50 an hour, but also a reference. If I were your boss, I wouldn't let you go. You work for 16 days...and now you want 12 days off?! At most maybe a couple days, but that's still bad form.

*edit* and change your title + description of your problem...you don't have to go away.

Just say "I have to go, I can't work here no more". That is all.

Yep... in my state it is right to work. They can terminate me at anytime for any reason, and I can quit anytime for any reason.

It's called an unforseen circumstance. Tell your boss you applied in good faith, but this came up, and you have to go with your mom. If you're returning, maybe your boss will respect your honesty, and you'll have a job when you get back. If not, you told the truth. It isn't hard to live with that. 🙂

I'll never forget the job I had early on that when my Parents came by at the job to pick me up because my Grandfather passed away and we had to drive to the next State the Owner of the place said you leave, you're fired. She said only if was my funeral would I be excused.

Well last summer I applied for a job at Eckerds, worked there a month, then told them I need 2.5 weeks off to go to Italy 🙂 It was a trip for honors students at my school, I told him I had just been selected a couple of weeks before (I think I told him around July 2nd, left on the 15th). He let me come back to work. This summer I also took 2 weeks off, June 10-24, after working at a different Eckerd's store for about 3 weeks..if they need you/like you, they will keep your job..if not, then what can you do?

question about quitting, a bit off topic, but in lieu of giving your two weeks notice, can you simply quit the day you notify your employer and forfeit your 2 weeks of pay?

Um, what? Unless you're contractually obligated to give advance notice, you can say "fvck u" and quit any job you want.

last i heard you didn't have to give 2 weeks notice it's just a well accepted amount of time to give them so they can replace you. you can just straight up quite but i wouldn't expect to get a good reference out of the deal. if you are under a legaly binding contract requireing a set amount of notice before ending your employment you'd more than likely be fully aware of it.
