I have over $4000 of Unauthorized Charge on my CC what to do?

I checked my Discover card online and noticed over $4000 was charged on my account 3 days ago. I called Discover and put in a fraud claim and Discover said they will do a Fraud Investigation. I still have my card, how do they get my number and will I be liable for the fraud charges? Has anyone been in this situation before and what do you suggest I do next?

I don't think you can be liable for any unauthorized use of your card. Just make sure they don't see a cent of that money.

Have you been using your card online lately? Any of the stores somewhat shady?

I had a card stolen last year, my Platinum AMEX. AMEX was great, they cancelled the card, told me not to worry about the $1000 in charges, and airmailed me a new card which I had the next day.

You covered the basics by filing a dispute and getting an investigation going. What sucks is that it takes up to 90 days to complete. Hope you don't have to pay on the fraud charges.

Cancel your card, have Discover flag it as "stolen" so that anyone attempting to purchase with it will be sharply and severly 0wn3d, and thank your lucky stars you've paid your fraud coverage. You did pay it, right?

After all this, then you can find out where your card # got nerfed from.

I guess I don't feel so bad Amex said it would take 6-8 weeks to resolve my dispute with PriceSuckLine.com

Actually, I think any type of bank can take up to 90 days to complete their investigation. 6-8 weeks is more like the norm, AFAIK.

Read the fine print on your statement or your card agreement. Most card companies shield you from liability pending investigation. You shouldn't have to pay a cent until they come to a resolution.

What fraud coverage? Don't they automatically come with that coverage free of charge already? I think most companies used make you pay the first $50, but most of them are done away with that already.

MAKE SURE you file your complaint in WRITING with the credit card company. A phone call is not enough to prove your correspondence with them. Write a letter detailing everything you told them over the phone, and send it registered mail to the address they give you. Its extremely important you do this.

As long as 60 days have not passed before notifiing your cc company of the fraud, you will be absolved of any responsibility for the balance.
Sound like you were "skimmed" ie your cc number compromised. I would look to any resturant charges, online purchases, gas stations, to be the likely locations where someone got your number.
Give the local office of the Secret Service a call and have your Police Dept case # ready for them to follow up. Make sure you file the the Police report first, with your local jurisdiction...'luck

Send a letter to them with signature required on delivery. Calling generally doesn't preserve your rights, they have to have it in writing.

You should also sign up for their online service that will send you an email anytime a purchase is made above a certain dollar amount that you set.

Thank you. The back of most cc statements and account disclosures will state calling will NOT PRESERVE YOUR RIGHTS ... you MUST dispute the fraudulent charges in writing via snail mail. Definitely send it via USPS with either signature confirmation or registered mail, it'll cost you about $3-$5 but it's better than being told later on that you're screwed because you never sent in a letter. BEFORE you send in your letter I would recommend if you have online access to your Discover card, print out all statements involved, highlight and circle the fraudulent charges, call Discover CS and ask for the mailing correspondence address to their fraud department and ask if you have been assigned a case or file no. If you have make sure to include that on your letter so they don't have to search for it or they might create a DUPLICATE case which will delay the outcome.

Also make sure to read this from top to bottom.

Thanks for all the advices. I'll send in a certify mail with signature require. Since I reported stolen, I can't access the online account info anymore. I'll call Discover and see if I can get a case number or something to reference to my case. Now, the question is when my statement arrives for this month will I have to pay the full amount or just pay my authorized charges? Since my credit is still in my precession and I am assuming they got my CC numbers from pass purchases and from my understanding doesn't the Credit card company require that they swipe the Credit Card with Carbin Copy of the Credit card if the numbers are manually punch in?

Any place you use your card (restaurants, etc.) ALWAYS check the receipts you sign. I have encountered several places where the receipts display all 16 digits of your card number. This makes it very easy for someone to steal your card number. I used to know someone who worked as a waiter. He told me that if someone didn't give him the tip he thought he deserved, and they paid with a cc, he would steal their number and really mess them over. It pays to be observant any time you whip that card out in a public place.

Similar thing happened to me earlier this year, amount was $2500. I didn't have to pay anything towards that at any time. It was a little bit different from your situation though, they called me to check on the large purchases made in another state.

They are on my ass now though whenever I make a bunch of charges in a short period of time. They'll call to make sure it's me, and if I don't have my cell phone nearby to answer they'll turn off my card until I contact them.

You won't have to pay it, they should issue you a new card and mark that one as stolen though. And whether it got stolen through the internet or not is hard to say, you have a greater chance of it being stolen at a resturant or some other store where people handle the card. As long as you stick with secure sites that use 128bit encryption for transactions your card should be safer there than a physical store.

I've havent had that happen to me (crosses fingers). I have a CaptialONE card and its a $0 fraud liability.
