I have nothing but contempt for software writers who create applications and operating systems so susceptible to viri & trojans that you have to become a computer expert and devote inordinate amounts of time and/or money to protect yourself from said viri & trojans.

Or, even if they did have the right programs to protect them, as they download updates to the virus list, they are already fully infected within 30 seconds...

Guess who I have contempt for? I'll give you a hint, it starts with "Pompus and indignant attention" and ends with "whores."

it really depends

i have delt with (to me) very dumb cutomers, but it all depends on how they act that changes my feelings towards them

one lady didn't know how to shut off her windows 98 machine (happened with in the last 5 months) i simply told her how to do it and she was on her way and very polite
(people like that i have no problem with, she needed a simple answer and didn't waste a lot of my time)

another customer asked me "how do you know what to double click on and single click on" then got all pissy about how we didn't provide a manual with the machine and started talking to me like IM the stupid one
(he pissed me off to no end, i really hope he's passed the return policy so he's stuck with the damn thing)

blaming the unknowning end-user is like blaming the victim of rape. Except us geeks don't get paid to fix that sort of problem.

When you get older, your body leaks fluids and puffs gas. :p

Yes, that is why they make things to help with those problems.

My contempt is for the IT nazis who are so convinced that they are intellectually superior to everyone that they block access to all mainstream mail sites which have virus scanning software guaranteed to be more up to date than the IT guy's stuff. It would be ok if they blocked it because of personal email on company time, but no, it's because of potential viruses. Genius.

Well you would be surprised how easy it happens.

I set up a DMZ ip and then fired up an old lappy, which had the lease on the DMZ'd IP. Within TEN MINUTES it was getting fckd with all sorts of crap. No downloads, no browser starts, nothing.

Your rant sucks. It needs more swearing, more antecdotes, more supporting evidence, a different subject and less smiley faces.

You should know that trying to design a system that is bulletproof is impossible. If developers had to run around all day worried about this, then the software would never reach market. There is a reasonable amount of work that can be done on the front end to ward off attacks, but creating software with the express intent that it will not be susceptible to attack is ridiculous.

And yet some systems manage to do so much better then others.
