My computer has been acting a little odd lately, and I decided that it would be a good opportunity to say goodbye to XP and put on RedHat. (I am familiar with RedHat -- I had it on an old computer that is gone now.) The first odd thing was that my dvd burner stopped recognizing anything was in it. I figured it was going bad, so I replaced it with a new one. That didn't work either (it would just freeze up when I tried to read anything that was in it), and to add to the problem, my cd burner stopped working too -- as in, the computer wouldn't even recognize its presence. So I gave up and tried to format.

Tried, anyway. Here's where it gets really ugly.

I used wreckit.exe (which I have used before successfully) to overwrite the boot sector so I could format from dos or use my RedHat 9.0 install discs. Computer wouldn't recognize install CDs though! Rebooted with a DOS boot disc, and hmm, I don't seem to have a hard drive. (Maxtor 60 GB drive.) Used maxblaster to reinstall and format, maxblaster says it is successful. However, when I go from A: to C:, it just flashes C: and then goes back to the A: prompt in DOS. Won't actually change to the C: drive. And I don't appear to have a CD drive. However, the BIOS recognizes that both of my drives are there!! I reset the BIOS to boot from CD (tried both drives), but still, my boot CDs are not recognized. Tried a boot floppy for older RedHat -- gives me a Kernel Panic and hangs at install.

So I am stuck. Can't put on RedHat from a floppy, can't use a CD drive to put on *any* OS. Any ideas?? I think this is making my husband secretly smile cause now he can say I broke the computer -- and probably be correct!!

Help please :(
