One of our machines is freaking out! It is a PII400 running Win2K Server. If you try to click on a desk top icon, they move. I mean the icons move around as if being chased by the cursor. It is almost like they have opposite magnetic charges.

I have rebooted several times with no change in the "condition." I have logged on as the administrator, still does it. Tries to arrange the icons through desktop properties. They do line up but run away as you approach with the cursor.

I have run several different virus scans that have turned up nothing. I have checked under task manager to look for services or applications that are out of place, nothing.

Help, please!

Thanks!

edit- adding more info on problem.

Have you updated the virus defs. before running the virus scan. It is a virus, although I can't tell you which one off the top of my head.

I'd pull that computer off the LAN, NOW!!! Find out the virus if you want but personally I'd reinstall the whole thing.

Did the updates this morning. I am trying an online scanner now. Good point about isolating that box from the LAN. Thanks!

something similiar occurs if you've been infected with W32.Magistr.24876@mm for over two months. on odd days the desktop icons are repositioned whenever the mouse pointer approaches, giving the impression that the icons are "running away" from the mouse:
