I have never seen a Star Trek episode! Where should I start!?!

Star Trek never appealed to me. I keep hearing my friends talk about it but just never got into it. I love scifi stuff so I'm wondering where should I start? Which season? The Shatner days? Stewart days? Should I watch the television episodes or the movies?

<-- knows nothing Star Trek related!

Start with the next generation, if you start with the original series, you will end up watching one episode and then giving up because it is too corny for today's young people.

TNG, or DS9, the only good series.

Don't watch the original series. Total crap. Start with season 1, ep. 1 of Star Trek: The Next Generation. When you finish the series, watch a couple seasons of Deep Space Nine, then start on the movies beginning with Generations. After the movies, watch the rest of DS9. Then watch maybe the last three seasons of Voyager. Just my 2 cents.

Agreed. If you have Netflix or something then you can rent the show on DVD and start from Season 1 (which kinda sucks too).

Your other option is to just start watching it on TNN or Spike or whatever it's called now. Most of the episodes can stand alone so it's not really imperative that you watch from the beginning.

Shatner = two-fisted macho captain, action, good scripts, very dated special effects.

Picard = sensitive new age man, can't we all just get along?, politically correct adventures in space, OK-to-good scripts, good special effects for their time.

Bakula = wussy feeble non-captain, "action" I guess, bad scripts, pandering to lowbrow trek fanboys who love the clumsy and stupid "foreshadowing" of what already happened in the earlier shows.

neocons and Bush fans should enjoy the original Trek, since despite talking about the "prime directive" of non-interference Kirk was much more willing to do what he thought of as the right thing regardless of rules.

But yes, parts of it are pretty corny 🙂

lol... well, come on, my mom watched TOS.

BTW, neovan, have you seen any Firefly or Stargate SG-1? Both really good series. And you can get all 14 episodes of Firefly on DVD for like $30.

I've seen most of the Stargate SG-1 episodes. I really wanted to catch Firefly but never got the chance. I just might get that set. Is Firefly still a running series or did it get cancelled?

ST: First Contact movie. I used to hate all trek but after reluctantly watching this movie I now love it.

but it's not that great as entertainment. there are some good episodes/movies but most are cheesy/bad. i like it mainly because it has some interesting ideas.

Oh, it's very canceled. I heard a rumor that a movie's going to be made though.
The show's really amazing; surprisingly hardcore. Great cast, great special effects.

EDIT: Everything was italicized by accident.

I LOVE sci-fi. HATE Star Trek... any of 'em. That goes for Star Wars crap, too. For example, one of my favorite, classic Sci-Fi movies is Forbidden Planet. No cowboys and Indians in space, like Star Trek. The Matrix is also a GREAT example of good Sci-Fi, which is hard to come by. Sci-fi has not been treated with respect over the years, so we end up with crap like Star Trek and Star Wars.

you obviously don't know what you are talking about.

Sci fi movies from the 50s are crap. you probably find that dick van *** is a comedic genius and do wop was the best music ever made.

you could start with the dvds for deep space 9, its all out now, and next year, voyager dvd will come out too.
