I have my own immigration and naturalization question

Here's my situation. I was born in Vietnam but came to the US when I was about a year old. I have a permanent resident card and social security card but they were lost stolen about 3 years ago. My parents became US citizens after I turned 18 years of age and basically everyone in my family is a US citizen except me. I'm planning to travel soon so how would I go about getting a passport. I already applied to get a duplicate of my permanent resident card but they said it might take a year. Anybody have any ideas?

LOL man, I'm in the exact situation as you are.
Came here wheh I was 3 and I became a US citizen along with everyone in my family a long time ago.
I lost my US citizen paper a while back and I went to apply for another one.
I thought everyhting was taking cared of until they sent me a paper asking for either A) passport B) birth cert.
Hell, A) I need the US citizen paper to get my passport B) if I had a birth cert, I wouldn't need my US citizen paper.

I'm pretty sure you became a US citizen when everyone else in your family became one. At least if your parents were smart they would have included you.
Have you gone to the local Immigration and Naturalization service ??
I need to go there when I get the time to see whats up.
I plan to go back to Vietnam soon for the first time ever.

He was over 18 when his parents became citizen, so he is automatically excluded.

Yeah...I just read up on that. Thanks. But isn't there a way of getting travel documents of some sort w/o becoming a citizen.

CTrain - I know I'm not a citizen because my older brother (who was also born in Vietnam) did all his paper work to get his citizenship because my parents got their citizenships after we became 18 years old. My two younger siblings were born here so they're automatic. I plan on going back to the motherland too just to visit some relatives I've never officially met.

Yes, you can get a VISA (not the credit card). But you'll need to get it approved for each and every country you're visiting.

Well you'll need to get Vietnam's passport. Unless you have that, you won't get any passport.
As for re-entering the US, I think you can apply for Advanced Parole in your local USCIS office. Its usually for people with pending green card, but considering your condition, they might let you apply for one.
I think safest route is to wait until you got the replacement green card.

Thats odd. Some of my older brothers and sisters were over 18 and we all went down to some office to be sworn in together. Maybe I was too young to know what was going on .

Where are you in Cali ?? I'm moving to Sacto sometimes in August and I plan on going back to the motherland soon....as long as I get my sh!t together.
Me getting a duplicate US Citizen shouldn't be as hard as your. I know for a fact I'm a US citizen 🙂🙂🙂
