I have lost Windows 8 and Internet Explorer but I still can use Firefox.

My windows desktop has dissapeared and the windows apps that appears in the left hand corner has gone, the bar on the right hand side that switches the power off that has gone the search bar at the top off the bar has also gone. I can access a folder via torrents through firefox so I have a way to the control panel.

You've obviously not lost Windows then. How did this come about? Go to Eset and run their online scanner. Make sure both options are checked and check the first 3 options under advanced - then let 'er rip.

Press CTRL + SHFT + ESC and program named "Task Manager" should appear.

If the bottom row of the application has a down arrow with the text "More details", click it. If they weren't already visible, there should be many tabs, including a "Details" tab, which you should click on.

Select an applications with the name "explorer.exe" then click "End task" at the bottom-right of the app. After there are no more, select File then "Run new task."

Enter "explorer" then click OK.

Explorer should be back to normal. In truth, you might not have had to kill your Explorer instances, and that's something you can experiment with if this happens again, but I thought I'd err on the side of making things less complex.

Can you run system restore and restore the system to an earlier time, as detailed by Rhonda? The run command for Win7 is rstrui.exe and it *should* be the same for win8.
