I know this is probably a simple question for you all to answer, but, for some reason, I have lost the standby mode in Windows 98SE. I looked in the Device Manager and Advanced Power management is still present. However, when I go to Shut Down, Standby is not an option. I checked the BIOS and everything appears right, but maybe I missed something. Can anyone please help me. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Try to use your power button on your case to put it into standby. That will help you to see if ACPI is still working.

(PS make sure that your button is set to put your computer in standby instead of using it for shutting the computer sown completely)

Make sure the APM is enabled in both the bios and windows.(i.e. in the device manager)

Thank you cirrus 1 and Biggs for your suggestions. However, I do not have the option to use my switch for standby. Also, I have checked both the device manager and the BIOS and APM is enabled. Any more suggestions? This is driving me NUTS!!! Thanks in advance.:confused:

When I 1st installed Win98 I wanted to get rid of all power
management. I went into BIOS and set all to disabled.
Went into Win98 and unchecked all schedulers and power management.
Then went into the device manager and deleted Advanced Power
Management Support under system devices.
That got rid of system standby in the shutdown box.
Maybe you can reverse this procedure to get it back.....
For instance, delete all devices in the system devices (except for
plug n play). Then reboot. Win98 will reinstall
all the devices......Greg

use this registry key to make it appear back in the start menu,
keep in mind that APM, and APCI MUST be enabled (in the bios, and the Drivers must be installed) for the Suspend command to work,
otherwise, it'll do nothing, or lock your computer

open Regedit and ind the key

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\Root\*PNP0C05\0000]
The Value Name is: APMMenuSuspend
Data Type: REG_BINARY (Binary Value)
Value Data: (00 = not visible, 01 = visible)
set to 01, and it should be available.

also look at

they should have a lot of Info about this.
the Windows Registry Guide, and Regedit Website

sorry, i fixed the link

Man, thanks for all the information! I have tried every suggestion thus far and nothing seems to be working. I even re-installed Win 98 and that didn't work. I'm about to give up. Would formatting my hard drive and starting over completely help? Please let me know if it's worth all the effort and thanks again. You people are great!!!

Open the registry and navigate to the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VPOWERD key.

Change the following two values as indicated below:
SuspendFlag = 0
SuspendHasWorkedFlag = 1

This was one of those learn-the-hard-way nuggets. Windows will prompt you to disable standby if it fails to work for several consecutive times. If you accept the prompt, it changes the above values to something like 2 and 512 (if I remember correctly) which triggers removal of standby from the options in the shutdown dialog. Restoring these values will return the standby option.

This is one of those asinine undocumented "features" of Windows...I had to find an old copy of the registry, restore it, and use some context clues to find where this flag might be stored. Then swap back the registry and compare values. I've since needed to apply it to several machines and can indeed confirm that it works.

Incidentally, if you are having problems with standby or suspend, download the APM Troubleshooter from Microsoft. It will monitor the standby process and report any troublesome devices or settings.

Best regards,
Floyd
