I have internet connectivity but can't connect via IE!?

Alright, I had a strange thing happen that I hope someone can give some insight on. I updated my Canon Zoombrowser software on Saturday and after rebooting my pc I could no longer connect to the internet via IE but still could with Maxthon (3rd party tabbed browser/IE shell). Now, this seems very strange since Maxthon is basically just an IE shell. Also, my Weather Channel software still connects but Netscape won't either. I have been using Zoombrowser for about a year and have updated several times previously with no problems. I uninstalled all Zoombrower components and installed SP1 for IE6 but neither made any difference.

Now it get's even stranger, I went to Microsoft's website and found a suggestion to run SFC /SCANNOW which I did. This time, after rebooting, my display options are limited to 800x600 @ 14 colors; even though the advanced properties list the correct monitor and video card. And now Maxthon won't connect either but my Weather Channel software still does. 😕

I have a cable internet connection that runs through a router. My other pc that shares the internet via the router is still able to connect normally. My pc runs XP SP1 and IE 6.

Thanks :disgust:

got to Internet Options, Connections tab, since you have a cable modem, go to LAN settings and check the "automatically detect settings" option. Press ok, apply, then ok again and restart.

Go to your control panel and Uninstall any software you think doesnt belong there like spyware or freeware that installs itself when your on a stupid website.

It has the earmarks of a DNS corruption via spyware. Try running this to fix your network stack. Then run Ad Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.

Winsockfix

The scannow has made sure that your files are MS certified. So more than likely you need to load your video drivers again. You will probably need to change the video card to standard VGA pci first, and then reboot and install the right driver.

Excellent advice! 😀

By the way, I had another odd occurance last night. I went into the driver screen for my video card, clicked on "update driver" and let windows find and install a new video driver. It installed an old version but it restored my video back to normal. That is the part I was hoping for. However, this process also caused Maxthon to be able to connect again. Now how are my video driver and internet connectivity tied together?

Try a reinstall of XP SP2. If that fails, you should just "bite the bullet" and format/reinstall XP. You'll spend a lot more time trying to fix the problem then starting from scratch.

Strange problem. Search for your hosts file and see what the entries are in it. Install and run hijackthis to see if something is starting up preventing IE to connect. Can't hurt to run winsockfix again either.
