I have "Halt on no errors" selected: why can't I run w/o a videocard?

The video card is the noisiest thing in my server. I have no KB or Mouse hooked up to it. I run it via TightVNC. I want to take the videocard out of there for less noise/heat, but if I do, the BIOS won't post and I get the beep-error-code for bad videocard. :|

I have "Halt on no errors" selected in the bios. The board is an ABit KT7-R...the bios was flashed about a year ago...can't remember which one it is....it's the latest one for that board though.

Any ideas?

maybe you can find an old 1-2 meg pci video card at you local computer store,shouldnt be more than 5-10 $ Max.

an old pci S3 virge or similar would be perfect.

Why not just put an old video card in there that doesn't have a fan on it?

They make those you know ...

I third the suggestion of a odl S3 Virge or Trio64 (or anything without a fan).

there are 3 basic things need to POST..

memory, keyboard, and video (and cpu duh!).

If one is not present it wont POST.

For some reason, I always thought you could get away w/no videocard. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

i know you can get away w/o a keyboard to post since you can set it not to find one since most servers dont use it that often

There is no KB or mouse hooked to my server. The AC power cable, the LAN cable and the serial cable from the UPS. That's it.

It seems to depend on your motherboard/BIOS.

I know some people who run systems without a graphics card - no problems.

I've even seen one motherboard, that wouldn't boot if a *monitor* was switched off/unconnected. No monitor, no boot (just no video error beeps).

Voodoo 3 3000 runs hot tho.

The ability to run without a video card is called a "headless boot" and is NOT the same as running without a monitor, as many people use it to refer to. Most server boards can be run headless, but for the most part desktop boards cannot.

And yes - the V33K will raise the temp in your server box to a nice level of Toastiness(tm). I suggest digging something like an S3 Trio or Trident card out of a garbage bin somewhere. If you don't have one handy, I could probably spare one.
