$600 Million data center announced in Pryor Oklahoma today

Very odd since most people in this are not only don't have access to high speed internets but don't even have a computer.

Every person in my neighborhood I have mentioned this to have never heard of Google and have no idea what Google does.

They have heard it will bring jobs.

Hopefully it brings high speed internets too.

5-2-2007 Google to build $600M data center near Pryor

PRYOR, Okla. Internet giant Google says it'll build a 600 (m) million dollar data center on 800 acres at Mid-America Industrial Park in Pryor.

The center will provide support for Google's numerous Internet services and will hire about 100 people in the coming months.

Officials say employment will eventually reach about 200.

Google is planning to convert a warehouse to open next summer and later add a new building on the site.

Their electric bill is gonna be in the millions.

See Map in OP

Electric is practically for free off the nearby hydroelectric dams on Lake Hudson and Grand Lake that have been idle for decades very underutilized.

Even being Oklahoma, I have a hard time believing your neighbors have never heard of Google. The only possibility -- and truly the most likely thing -- is that you are in an insane asylum, and the "neighbors" you are speaking of are fellow patients that were committed many years before you.

That could be, the State mental facility is the next town from me in Vinita.

I'm wondering where they are going to find all of the geniuses they normally hire in Oklahoma?

They said on the news the jobs will pay $48,000 yr.

There is four technical colleges in the area plus two college giants;

OU Oklahoma University (Sooners)

and

OSU Oklahoma State University (Cowboys)

OSU is currently expanding with a huge Tech center and new football stadium.

Dave,

Sounds like you could get a very high paying job. Time to get on it.

I am getting calls, E-mails and PM's all day since this broke on the news.

Here that sound? That's opportunity a knockin'. And she don't come calling very often.

Get to work, as in get to work on getting the job.

hiring 100 people doesn't really do much for a city

No, but the taxes collected on services will.

DataCenters are relatively "dark" in that they don't need a lot of people. But they pay massive amouts of electrcity and telco taxes and other service oriented employment.

That 600 mil is going directly to the local economy. Not all, but a fat healthy chunk of the labor is.
