After being introduced to Counter-Strike a few years back I have been a PC gamer ever since. I have played most of the "big" titles the past few years such as Half-Life, HL2, Doom 3, and Far Cry. Now I'm on the verge of building a high-end rig, for gaming and general use. With my new Dell 2405 gaming is better than ever. I recently started to get into gaming more, and I am trying to figure out what great games I have missed out on. Since my current system cannot play the latest and greatest such as BF2, FEAR, or Call of Duty 2, I am searching bargain bins and Best Buy racks for great titles. Recently I bought and played through Call of Duty, Call of Duty: United Offensive, and Halo. I am eager to find an older but still fun to play game that can run smooth on my system. This is the list of games that I am considering:

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault + Expansions
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault + Expansions
Warcraft III
Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars Battlefront

I have probably overlooked some games, so my question is what games do you recommend? Are there any on my list not worth buying?

Well it would be nice if you posted your system to see what it can handle at what settings.

Knights of the Temple was a great little game I played a while back. Doesn't get my mention now a days, but it's a nice game nonetheless. you can DL the demo at download.com (i think it's still up there)

Thief: deadly shadows was great.
You can go way back and try stuff like system shock 2, or further back to the beginnings of Final fantasy...Crono trigger, zelda.

I have probably overlooked some games, so my question is what games do you recommend? Are there any on my list not worth buying?

I know exactly what you mean, and I've got some great suggestions for you but it largely depends on what type of games you like. I take it from the list that you're into shooters and strategy mostly?

Even though it's not an FPS the first game that comes to my mind is Hitman. Hitman is an absolutely amazing game, if you have some patience. You basically play the role of a paid assasin who gets missions from 'the agency', before each mission you buy weapons from the agency and get a briefing on what exactly you have to do. Usually it entails killing someone, or making sure someone stays alive, or framing a person, or some wierd combination of those. Some levels are very complex, but incredibly fun, the game (especially the newest one, Hitman 3 Contracts) has good 3d graphics, the first might be a bit outdated, but it also features high quality gameplay. You can do things like strangle someone silently with a fiberwire while they're taking a leak in the alley, then drag them down into a pot hole and change into their clothes (in the case I'm thinking of it's a limo driver) then you can use that costume to do things you couldn't otherwise do, like get into the car of the person who you need to assasinate and rig a bomb, the guards won't bug you if you don't get to close to them or act suspicious. There's usually lots of ways to beat a single mission as well, so that's always fun. The storyline is quite interesting as well... And there's a cool AI engine, you need to watch out for curious civilians and police who might get in your way (killing innocents even if they attacked you takes away from the mission reward). If you make too much of a mess the agency will fail you on the mission and pretend you never existed, game over in other words. So anyway that's a great game, the sequels are good too, I reccomend them personally but you might want to download a demo.

What else... Homeworld 2 is an absolutely fantastic RTS. Hands down the best space RTS I've ever played, very good fun, and you can definitely get a demo for that. You can build all sorts of amazing ships and have huge fleet battles, send in marine frigates to try to breach the enemies hull and take over their battlecruiser from inside! I can't really explain it that much, you just have to see it, but if you're into sci-fi and like the idea of an RTS in space then you should certainly check it out.

Another RTS which happens to be one of my favorits is Command and Conquer Generals. This is in my opinion the first RTS that managed to pull off the 3d look well. Yes when you zoom in it looks a bit crap, but just don't zoom in and you're set =) Anyway, CCG especially with the add on Zero Hour is absolutely great fun, it's a very addictive RTS, when you get to know some of the tactics and things you can do it becomes intense. And there's SO much technology in it. The super weapons are nothing to wave a stick at, China has high yielding nukes, USA has a particle uplink cannon, a high super high energy laser directed from a satellite that you can move around for a short duration of time, and the GLA have a scud storm, (a scud is a huge missile launched as artillery from massive trucks, this thing is a silo with about 8 of these that launch to anywhere on the map). You can do things like pack the scuds with anthrax to harm infantry that may pass over that area after a while, you can get upgrades like EMP airstrikes, artillery bombardment, fuel air burst bombs or MOABs, and all sorts of other madness. Another thing worth mentioning is that this is the first RTS where using planes is REALLY FUN, they come in fast and have intense missile dog fights, you can get upgrades like countermeasure flares, and point laser missile defense systems etc.

Yet another RTS which is similar to CCG but less arcady is Act of War. Its almost exactly like CCG but is more realistic, when a tank fires at another one and gets a direct hit, you really FEEL it, it can almost disable it completely or atleast knock it down to very low armor, another hit will almost certainly take it out, as opposed to CCG or any other RTS for that matter where tanks fire at eachother for ages. The infantry fighting is also more realistic, they can fight inside of buildings etc, for lots of cool detail, snipers are fun to play with as well, and the planes are INTENSE. Unfortunately the only draw back to this one is that apart from USA the other teams don't feel very balanced or well thought out. You can tell this game wasn't made by a company with alot of experience under its belt, it just doesn't feel as well balanced, which is so important for an RTS. Even so it's worth checking out, get a demo.

Freelancer is a must try if you're into space flight games but want something less complicated and more fast and furious/twitchy. Freelancer has a very fun storyline and the dogfights are sooo much fun. Easy to get into unlike other space sims.

I can't really think of many old FPS's that are good... The only ones I ever played much when I had a PC (don't have one anymore) was, in order from latest to earliest: BF2, HL2/CSS, Battlefield 1942/Desert Combat and that's about it. I think there are so many crap FPS's that come out that just aren't worth playing. I never really got into CoD much but I heard from many that its good so that's cool if you're into that. Can't really think of many other FPS's to reccommend... I'd say medal of honor allied assault, one of the first WW2 fps's that came out before that huge array of them came, it was alot of fun, but is certainly outdated by now. Some people liked return to castle wolfenstein as well, but it was a bit too quakeish for me.

I'm sure there's a million other games I could mention but I don't have time to write much more, I hope my input helps.

P.S. If you're interested in getting into the whole MMO thing, I'd reccommend EVE-Online (sci-fi) or Everquest 2 (fantasy). I think WoW is very unsatisfying personally... If you want to get an MMO that has no monthly payments, check out Anarchy Online (sci-fi, notice this game is VERY old so it has primitive 3d graphics, but its quite fun, disregarding the community) or Clan Wars (very high quality fantasy, don't know why they don't charge monthly rates but they have alot of customers...)

Alright mate, good luck.

Good list, I'd throw Diablo 2 on there though! That's a classic in my book anyway.

Yeah sims is kind of useless. I actually liked building houses though, for like 10 minutes. Then it got kind of boring because there's not enough stuff and it's not very realistic, maybe I should get an architectural prog instead... But yeah watching your sims go to the bathroom and sleep is very boring. Stay away!

No one mentioned Deus Ex, which is surprising. It's usually recommended.

If you want something fun and comedic, the No One Lives Forever series is fantastic.

Just played Beyond Good and Evil and it's a gem.

I remember playing Red Faction a long time ago on the pc. It was a blast to play. It gives you a bit of a Half-life feeling while playing it. It also had destructable environments so in some spots instead of finding a key code you could just blast right through the damn wall. Another thing I remember is strapping a remote explosive to an enemy's back and watching him run around screaming like a sissy back to his squad. I hit the button then and blew them all up. :) It was a bargain bin game when I played it. It should be $10 at the most.

Thanks guys you gave me some good titles I may have not heard of otherwise. Some games recommended aren't compatible with XP, such as Monkey Island. I ordered Knights of the Old Republic and the Logitech G5 mouse today by the way, and will eventually buy several other titles.

UT2004-The current cream of the crop in multiplayer first person shooting.

C&C Generals w/ Zero Hour Expansion- A very great(and affordable) game. It stirs up the C&C universe and takes it to a very different, but also good direction.

World of Warcraft- A very popular MMORPG, I had fun with it for about a month before it became repetitive.

Serious Sam 2- I was a little skeptical to buy this one because of the reviews, but this game has turned out to be an extremely solid, humorus, and over all enjoyable single player game. There even is cooperative play, with difficulties that can range from easy to ones that you will NEVER be able to do.

Age of Empires 3-Reviews have said that this was just a good game with insane graphics. After playing this game on and offline for the course of two weeks, I have come to the conclusion that this game is legendary. This is Starcraft level. People will speak of this game 10 years from now. First time I have played a game 15+ hours straight in a LONG time.

BF2- A sometimes laggy and glitchy game, but overall very good multiplayer.

These are all that I feel are worth mentioning for the moment. People say FEAR is very good, but I have only played the demo, so I cannot comment on it.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 have trouble with X2 processors despite any X2 fix, and they don't like LCD monitors. Chalk that up to the antiquated engine and lack of support for some time, atleast for the original.

Definetly try out Warcraft III. It's a tough game to get good at, but it's fun as hell.

Undying, highly underrated but if you want a good "scare the hell out of you" game this is it. There are a few sites dedicated to user made maps
and most of the ones I have played have been very well made.
