I have either made a pretty low-quality paint booth

...or a damned fine meth lab.

I'd post particulars, but it's all your pretty normal paint booth kinda stuff...tent from Target...lots of plastic sheeting, with duct tape applied by Michael J Fox...your standard 'cinderblocks and a hammock frame' anchoring system...

...yup...totally normal.

Results will follow.

And no, there's no room to paint in my garage. And no, a car does not fit in there. I would need two tents for that.

I could have told you that just by the pic.

...just parts.

I was in a hurry to get some bare metal covered, so, yes, I neglected to hang up those fenders, and instead sprayed them on the ground like a goddamned caveman.

My air intake is working really, really well. Better than I thought it would...I mean, it's my shop fan with a $5 HVAC filter duct-taped to it. Literally a square peg in a round hole.

To round out my classiness, here's the HF gun I used to chuck epoxy primer. I actually think I could spray color with it. It's not bad at all once I managed to get it set up. Doesn't seem to cover great for the tip size, but that might be the primer's fault.

Also, my workbench that I set up in the tent there is the top of an old coffee table, complemented nicely by a base that consists of an old plastic tote labeled 'shoes.'

edit: also, I will definitely be refining my little space there before I spray base and clear. Ground will all be covered, and I will get some professional-grade coat hangers to hang my parts from.

Oh yeah, how could I take a picture of this and not share it...

My 'prep bench':

It has camshaft feet. Among other things.

edit: Wait, no, I should've said 'when life breaks your camshaft, make table legs.'

I'm liking this painting thing, I think. It's new and engages my lazy side. Like, instead of 'diagnose x problem' or 'replace x part'...it's just sit down and fondle some parts. I can start off slow, rubbin' on a piece of metal like a sad panda, and a hour or two layer I'm like DAMN RIGHT, SPRAYIN' PAINT UP IN THIS BITCH.

I think I'm gonna go start in with some bondo. Like a sad panda.

If a car doesn't fit, what are you painting?

Not to give away a huge secret to cars, but they are actually made of thousands or more parts. All of these parts can be disassembled from one another, some of the parts are quite small. Even the body parts, which should be painted with the utmost care, are removable to some extent.

OP: Well Meth is definitely more profitable, and probably less nerve-wracking. I wouldn't wish body work on my worst enemy, and even painting walls reminds me of my hate-hate relationship with paints.

This is great. We built something similar in my youth to paint my brother's car. I'm hoping to turn my new lift into an impromptu spray booth. I'm really wanting to shoot my truck. Also, my Grand Marquis is painted with Shop-Line, it smells better than DuPont.

The clear coat on my old car is peeling. It's not worth it for me to take it to a body shop, and I'd rather leave it as is than take it to Maaco. Ive been considering getting a HVLP sprayer and trying to paint it myself. What is the prep work like? Wet sand clear coat out (using an orbital sander), use HVLP to spray a couple coats of the color, followed by a couple coats of clear?

Paragraph 1, disagree: Unless your car is unibody, which many are, then it's not made of multiple tiny body parts.

Paragraph 2, totally agree: I've learned that painting, nay, painting WELL is very difficult. It can look fantastic the first few months, but a year later it can turn to shit really quick. Painting a whole vehicle is not something I wish to tackle again.

Prep is the worst part but the part that matters most. For my Grand Marquis we (brother-in-law and I) hit the existing clear with a dry DA sander with a medium grit paper.

Then shot sealer, followed by the color, and finally the clear.

Is that 'ghetto but legit' or 'legitimately ghetto'? 😛

Sanding bondo now...will reshoot a light coat of primer when done, then paaaiiiinnnttttt. God bodywork takes forever when you actually give a shit.

Friggity fracking fuck.

I accidentally mixed some impotent filler, it seems. It won't get hard. I keep checking on it, but every time I touch it, it's mushy. =(

Time to scrape and redo...

could paint a motorcycle in there.

this would be bad ass, i could do this in my backyard. neighbors might call the cops on me tho... unless i share the meth...

Well, apparently I made a bad batch of bondo. It never kicked.

Grind it off the fenders. Can't grind the bumper I'm doing, 'cause the fiberglass will just turn to dust. Scrape scrape scrape.

As I was getting all the filler-gum off of one of the fenders, I realized some old filler that I had primed over was more widespread than I had initially thought. Way, way way more widespread. Grind grind grind.

There goes a day. I'm gonna punch someone.

True, the quarter panels, roof, A/B pillars, and rockers are usually all one piece, but I think it's doors, fenders, hoods and bumpers that usually get dinged up and replaced more often than general body work. Although blending of the paint is still required on the unibody.

I always liked how Saturns could unbolt and replace the quarter panels as ready to go pieces of plastic. They looked really funny with all body panels removed including door skins. 😛
