I have DSL. How much extra/mo would a STATIC IP cost? (reasons inside)

Maybe it's my imagination, but I think SWBell (Southwestern Bell) has some kind of sniffer software that detects someone trying to hit FTP on your IP and then changes your IP.

Last night, I had my GF try and hit my FTP server on my dynamic IP. Even though my IP is dynamic, it hasn't changed in MONTHS. Literally, and I check every few days.

Well, due to probs on my end, my GF couldn't hit the FTP server (I don't have it configured right) but I went and checked my IP. DIFFERENT than it was about an hour ago. WTH?

So, I tell my GF the new IP and ask her to ping it. She does. Pings fine.

Ten minutes later, I check my IP...DIFFERENT! Something is fishy.

So, getting to the original intent of this post, how much more per month do you think they'd charge me for a static IP? If I just call and ask, w/o knowing any baselines first, you know they will try to screw me.

Help, please.

they would have a set rate for it, they wouldnt "screw you".... that is, if they offer it.

most likely since they have their system set up for blocking stuff like that, they probably dont offer it, or maybe you would have to go with a business dsl instead.... best thing to do is just call and ask.

call... and ask... don't give your info...
just ask as a potential sales.

also check dslreports.com for more info.

is your ftp server on port 21?

if it is i would change it to something obscure like 8050 or something and always use that, it will stop the casaual port sniffer no matter who does it.

Thanks.

I understand the reasons to not let them know I'm already a DSL customer. But, I'd hate to miss out on any kind of "upgrade discounts"they may be offering, you know?

call once as a potential, and then if it sounds even close to reasonable, call back and tell them you are a customer, and see if they will give you a discount?

If they want to charge you a lot, look into getting a dynamic IP service, I think I paid 70 bucks for 2 years of service. My IP Address is www.WhatEver.dynip.com (the company I used was DynIP). I have had no problems with it in the last year. You install a program on a computer on your network that monitors your IP adress. When it changes, it updates DynIP's database which then knows where to route the address.
