I HAVE DSL AGAIN!!!

After some misunderstandings and mishaps I'm proud to annouce I have DSL again. I had DirecTV and since they're going out of business, time for a change. Long story short, you can't hot-swap a line in Verizon West (GTE) territory so I had my order rejected twice by Covad. Finally my line was released and yesterday the new line went in. So I was w/o DSL for about two weeks. I would call that fast turnaround since I had to wait for the line to be released. Good jobs on the part of Speakeasy, Covad and (reluctantly) Verizon.

woo ..

tried to get my speed bumped for the price im paying with SBC and i missed the CO by 2000 feet =( .. so, no speed increases for me. BUT, he did look at what price range my current speed falls into and now i pay 30USD/month for 86KB/s down and 15 KB/s UP.

EAT THAT AOL!

The title of this thread and your AT user name just makes me laugh 😀

The old DirectTV DSL modem is useless for any other network so did you buy a new Modem from your new Provider? There is a strange thing going on now where they give the Modems for free after you pay for it up front and wait for a rebate but the catch is you sign for a contract where you cannot switch providers. I am in the process of putting a website together where you can buy a DSL modem direct without waiting for Rebates, contracts etc. You can go to the store or online and buy a cable modem, a DSL Modem should not be a different. You don't get a telephone or Dial up modem that way.

I got a modem from Covad for like $200 w/ appropriate $200 rebate. I think I ended up with an 18 month contract since I'm getting a free PS2 out of Speakeasy as well. I agree tho that one should be able to buy their own modem. Thing of it is, there are so many kinds of DSL modems that it almost makes more sense to just let the provider give you one. I mean, the PPOE are different from the statics, different setups w/ ADSL. IMHO the variety is just too great to make selling modems a viable business. Cable modems are a lot easier since they all seem to work the same.
