So I have decided to put some weight onto my skinny self and I am really confused.

For the past 3 weeks, I have been going to go the gym and really putting an effort into it.

HOWEVER...

I see no results. i even lost 4 pounds since i started.

also, how do you guys motivate yourselves to go to the gym.

after a long day, the last thing i wanna do is bust my ass off.

edit: stats

You got to eat. Eat. And eat some more. Have you ramped up your protein intake since lifting? You have to give your muscles fuel to grow.

Look at the gym as another job, you HAVE to go. You let one day slack and the next thing you know, you haven't been to the gym in years. Don't worry about your gains. Just eat and give everything you've got at the gym. Everything else will fall in place.

yeah, you need to eat much more. When I go to the gym, I have to intake at least 5000 food calories otherwise, I lose weight due to running.

Since I have since stopped being able to afford 5000 calories of food, I stopped going to the gym.

your weight loss could be to the increased activity and you may be losing fat quicker than ur gaining muscle, although u did say ur skinny so idk

Eat a lot.

I went from (6') ~140lb to ~158lb..stopped working out and dropped to just under 150. Went back to the gym yesterday - I need that weight back! :)

Go to t-nation.com, read, learn and then eat.

Then eat some more.

As others have said, if you want to grow, you need to eat big. However, I don't recommend just going all out and eating everything in sight. That can get out of hand and leave you with a lot of excess fat. I suggest a more methodical approach. Note I have posted this same advice before, but this question keeps getting asked on here, so my advice remains the same:

Most skinny guys who say they eat "a lot" actually eat very little when they calculate it out. Go to this website here:

Fitday

and enter in a typical day's diet to see exactly how much you have been eating. I know guys who need to eat 7k+ cals/day to gain weight. You may have a fast metabolism, but that is no excuse. Trust me, you CAN outeat it.

Once you have a rough figure for what you are eating in a day, estimate your maintenance calories here:

BMR calculator

Your "maintenance calories" refers to the number of calories needed to exactly maintain your weight.

Make sure to click on the link labeled "Daily caloric needs" to get your actual number of calories per day.

Now, once you have this number, eat that amount of calories every day for a week. Track your weight first thing each morning. If you have not gained a pound by the end of the week, then add 300 cals to your daily total and eat that much for the next week. Repeat this process until you are gaining ~1 lb./week.

I would advice you get 40% of your calories from protein, 40% from carbs, and 20% from healthy fats. Some people use other amounts but for a beginner it should work fine.

Need advice on what exactly you should be eating? Try here:

What to eat

The absolute cheapest source of protein right now is canned chunk lite tuna. Whey protein is good, although the price has skyrocketed over the past few months. ON 100% Whey is the 2nd cheapest source of protein right now, if you buy from here:

link

The cheapest source of carbs would be quick oats.

For fats, you can get a bottle of generic olive oil for pretty cheap.

This stuff may not be very appetizing, but if you want to gain weight for the least amount of money, you may have to sacrifice some taste.

I trust you have a solid weightlifing program in place. Without a good routine, you will not gain the type of weight you would like.

Finally, check out the link in my sig. Read the stickies posted in the various forums, and feel free to register and ask questions. The members there are very helpful and knowledgable.

Good luck, and feel free to PM me with questions. I get tired of typing all of this out because it gets asked on AT at least once a week.

If you just want muscle mass, eat protein shakes and work out.

You will not see results for months. Maybe after 3 months you will see a smaaaaaal improvement. Its a job. You go and do it.

You do not work out every day, Work out 3 or 4 days a week.

I think it goes like this:

6-8 lifts per set: strength
8-10: volume
10-12: riggedness (makes muscle look more cut in and nice)
12+: endurance training, loss of muscle.

IMO fuck this stupid shit "I need bulk muscle so chicks notice me" - when you are 40 yr old and stop going to gym all this proteine-grown muscle will turn into FAT and you'll have man boobs.

What I would do is mix gym and aerobics: one day gym, other aero, then gym again, etc, and 1 day off.
aero = running or biking at high intencity for 40-45 mins. For example if you run, don't jog like a grandma. RUN as fast as you can for 40 mins. Increase speed as you get fitter.

and never mix gym and aero in same day!

example....

Monday - gym
Tuesday - aero
Wed - gym
Thurs - aero
Fri- gym
Sat - aero
Sunday - day off.

This will grow your muscle slowly (aero offsets gym), but you will be very healthy and muscle will be more permanent and rigged. Not just volume which wil lturn to fat that some kids go for...

edit - don't eat protein with this ^^

That's basically what I had to do to gain weight..tons of water, protein shakes, ice cream, peanut butter, chicken, cheeseburgers, vegetables, etc..

i dont think that will happen anytime soon. I have a BMI of 18.5, on the borderline of underweight.

Man, seriously i dont know why people say 'mcdonalds makes you fat' etc.

I frequent KFC and mcdonalds almost every day and here I am, skinny as shat.

I just cant put on any weight through food, hence the reason for this thread

Ironic that you said that because I have been able to dominate 2.5km/5km races in my district.

I guess the same applies with running.

I am definately not trying to GAIN fat. I am stating that I CANT gain fat.

btw, if I gain any weight from the gym, will it affect my running?

Depends. *Some* gains in mass will certainly help your power and stamina. Too much of it and you might start putting excess wear and tear on your knees and other joints.

Where that line is really depends on the person. I'm 6' and around 165 right now. If I go over 180 I really start getting a lot of aches and pains in my knees and feet. My body just doesn't like the extra weight.

Chocolate Milk is my post workout recovery "fuel" of choice. Near perfect blend of the two.

I am 6" and 144.

I don't really like running though - I bike.

What vi_edit said - if you get too much fat/muscle, you have more weight to haul around, and increased wear on joints = bad.

Tell me WHY you want to "look more intimidating" ? Why extra weight? If you want to be good in combat go learn martial arts (I heard real training begins AFTER black belt).
