I have decided to jump on the bandwagon, but which one?

I know basically nothing about the differences between these franchises, but I'd like to expand my knowledge of popular/famous music (which I also know basically nothing of) and I think this is a good way to do it.

A quick look at wikipedia tells me that there's been a ridiculous number of releases for both franchises, but if you could pick only one to buy which would it be?

Edit: I have a 360, forgot to mention that.

i like the rock band instruments better, and i like the rock band DLC better. it also has a much better interface and presentation, imo. most of the ingame setlists are shite, however GH4 beats RB2.

if you don't want to spend much, look for one of the bundles on sale. GH4 and RB2 have both been around $100, RB1 signigicantly less.

I've always stuck with GH because I only play it by myself and I like the Gibson guitar.

GH3 Wireless Guitar is the best IMO ... I personally feel that you'll get a better deal out of RB, since you can import the songs from v1 into v2.

IMHO Rock Band is the far superior franchise. Instead of putting out a million incompatible games (ala GH), Rock Band 2 is a platform from which you can play nearly any song in the entire series without swapping discs (the upcoming Beatles game being the unfortunate exception). It also has much more and better DLC available. Now that the RB2 bundle has dropped to $100, it is a fantastic buy. Pick up a cheap used copy of RB1 (or rent it) so you can import all those songs as well for a $5 fee.

I haven't played GH:WT, but I've heard a lot of people found it disappointing.

Personally, after the suckfest that was Guitar Hero III and release of a Guitar Hero based on mother-fucking Aerosmith, I considered the franchise to have gone down the shitter and I was done with it.

i didn't play either until a few months ago. got guitar hero. played it maybe 3 times and haven't touched it since. i don't see the hype. there's no story, no point in playing, it's just repeating whats on the screen. i don't get how that is fun...

i don't even care for most of the songs either.

Rock Band, but I still think the earlier Guitar Hero games are better. Most of the fun of Guitar Hero was getting better at the game and beating really hard songs, and when the game is designed to be played multiplayer and you can only fail out so many times you don't want to push yourself too hard.

Well when you're a loser and have no friends to play with then I guess it could get boring but that isn't the case with the rest of us. I don't own the game and never will as I will not pay that much for a game but it is indeed fun. Especially when you're drinking and playing with a couple people.

Errmm... did you expect that there would actually be a story in a game like this?

The point in playing is the challenge. Pure and simple.

I have both too. Rockband is easily better. Also most bang for your buck. Just get Rock band 2, rent rock band 1, pay 5 dollars to rip the songs from 1, profit.

If you like Metallica though, GH Metallica is pretty damn good. Just wait for the price drops to 15-20 dollars.

I read around on this awhile before deciding on rock band. The reasons have mostly been mentioned. The by far largest one: Rock Band is (with the exception of the beatles) a platform, so you can play all the songs within one game. This seems like the only way to do things right? I mean who wants to swap discs all the time just to play a few different songs? Apparently you have too with GH:WT...which is pretty much unforgivable in and of itself. The whole design smacks of short term thinking to cash in on the goodwill of the first games rather then the long term goal of building the brand and a powerful platform that can't be ignored.

Song selection: Look up the DLC available for RB and Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero has a few songs I'd sure like to have but there just aren't very many of them available at all! Rock Band has far more.

Million games problem: Wouldn't really be a problem if you could import the songs, since you can't with GH this is a huge problem.

This is probably personal preference but I didn't even feel like I was going to be missing much when I looked over the setlist for the GH:WT game. The Rock Band games had some stuff I like at least. If you buy rock band 2, as mentioned for $5 plus rental/borrow RB1 you can have all the songs can be imported and you've got a lot of songs to start off with. Many of them actually good.

wow, because someone doesn't like a game it means they are a loser and have no friends? I love the logic on these forums. It's just all boils down to who you can insult and how fast you can insult them, isn't it?

I figured there would be more than mindless button mashing to match what is on the screen.

That does interest me, is it a standalone game? It looks like it is but I also see it listed as an expansion.

Oh and are the guitars for these franchises interchangeable?

On harder difficulties it's anything BUT mindless. Just because you didn't like it doesn't mean that it doesn't require thought.

Wow, you jump to a lot of conclusions.

I have a group of friends where we play all types of games regularly. Yea... so what, I didn't find standing there pressing buttons to a beat of a song all that fun or interesting. More power to you if you like it.

As far as music games went, I actually did like DDR, but that's not the "in" thing right now. DDR involved a lot more than just pressing buttons on a fake guitar or beating on fake drums. That, and I just don't have the manual dexterity to really play GH or RB well.

This has to be the one of the silliest statements I've ever read. I like DDR too, but let's see:

DDR: Hitting buttons on a special controller with your feet in time to music.

Rock Band: Hitting buttons on a special controller with your hands in time to music.

No, those aren't similar at all. :p

No shit.

I'm just saying I prefer the exercise in DDR to rock band.

These music games really seem to be enjoyed more by people who actually enjoy the songs and music in general as well. If you don't care to listen to regular(mostly older) rock, or have never attempted to learn an instrument in your life, I could see how these games would really seem pointless.
For some though, the challenge is there, just like any other video game. Shoot 100 zombies, score 8 touchdowns, or get 99% on a song, it's all the same. Purely taste.

people seem to forget that these games also have drums. if you think wailing on a plastic guitar is silly and want a more active musical experience, play the drums. 'shit is hard.

rush is an excellent band for drums, as is the who.
