Do I need 'NeroCheck.exe' and 'avgcc.exe /startup' running at startup?

NeroCheck.exe:
"Associated with "Nero Burning Rom" CD writing software. Checks for driver issues"

Avgcc.exe:
"AVG Anti-Virus 7.0 Control Center. Allows you to manage and control all AVG Anti-Virus components, settings and updates"

What exactly does NeroCheck do and do I need it at startup?
Do I really need avgcc running at startup? It seems as though all it does is place an icon my system tray that does the same thing as going to 'Start' > 'All Programs' > 'AVG Free Edition' > 'AVG Free Control Centre'. If I disable it, will it give me less secuirty because I won't have that icon in the system tray or is it just a 'shortcut' instead of having to access the control centre through the start menu.

Thanks.

FWIW, I wouldn't recommend using the MSCONFIG utility to control what starts up and what doesn't except, perhaps, while diagnosing a problem.

I would recommend reinstating both of those startup items and then using the configuration features of Nero and AVG Anti-Virus to determine whether or not they start up. The reason I suggest this is that, when you install or configure an applcation or utility and set it up with certain startup parameters enabled it is possible that other complementary features of the software (or even the OS) are configured to match that startup configuration. If you just disable the startup item alone those other features may remain misconfigured. This might possibly lead to error conditions or other faults in software or system behavior.

I use Nero myself, and I always configure it to NOT use the Nero StartSmart item (or whatever that startup doohickey is). I make that choice at installation time. I imagine that, if you right-click its icon in the SysTray you'll get a menu that will let you disable it through Nero's own configuration settings.

The AVG console might be a good thing to allow to load. I haven't played with AVG in a long time, but I suspect that the tray applet may have a role in warning you if something is wrong with the realtime scanner. In any case, you might read up in the help file for that AV application before just assuming that it's okay to ditch the SysTray applet.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help mate. Well I cant find any options about NeroCheck. Also does AVG have real-time protection?

I don't think you'll find options for NerCheck under Files/Preferences in Nero. I think you need to re-enable it in MSCONFIG, restart the system, then turn it off using the right-click context menu of the System Tray icon for the program. Unfortunately, I'm not sure about this. I've always just made the choice not to use StartSmart when it was presented by the installation dialog. So "StartSmart" is, I think, what you are looking for. Darned confusing when they name the applet differently from the feature name.

As for AVG -- as I said, I have not used it for a long time. (I set it up from various people who wanted free AV software on their personal syhstems.) At that time it did have real-time protection. I assume that it must still be so.

Sorry I can't be more precise and helpful.

Do a search in Google using the names listed in MSConfig, there's 2 or 3 sites that list what they do and from that you can decide if it's worth having them run. But looking at my own system, I have Nero unchecked and avgcc checked. If memory serves that's AVG's Control Centre that loads in the tray when you boot up.

Thanks man. Yeah I did look them up on google as I posted in my first post:

Does AVG's control centre really need to be running in the system tray (I like to keep my clean as possible). Is it just a shortcut instead of accessing it through the Start menu? Or does it have other purposes to help protect your PC?

I can't answer your question about AVG with absolute certainty - but I do know that it is what handles warnings and end user interaction - mine pops up a balloon whenever my database has become stale (the automatic update failed)... I'm not going to turn mine off. ;)
