Yeah, I just saw that. Why is this a question for the Federal Court? Sounds like another dumb Republican lawyer advised Bush incorrectly.

The hand recount is going to result in thousands of votes for Gore. The overseas ballots will not be enough to offset the win outside of Court. If the cases that have been filed go to Court, Gore will win by 10,000+ votes if a re-vote is ordered by the Court.

Gore will be our next President. You heard it here first.

What does he think, that the American people don't want an accurate count of the votes? It has always been a right, I thought to have a manual count done if the election results were close.

Let there be an accurate count! Make sure all the ballots are counted correctly.

Too much is at stake here. The next President of the US shouldn't be elected if all the ballots are not correctly counted.

I'm sorry but this is more than just simple retaliation. The republicans have been saying for days that the democrats should not take the matters to the judicial system (tainting our voting process) and yet they are the first ones to actually do so.

Bush should've just kept quiet and let Gore dig his own grave with the american people. Looks like he was just too eager to wear the clown suit as well.

I also find it very interesting that James Baker is the guy chosen by Bush. Anyone remember that he was the campaign manager for Poppy in '88 and was begged by Poppy to take over his '92 campaign.


Manual recounts have been done many times in FL and are, according to the atty guy, the final word on accuracy.

"We don't know what the true spread is," she said.

Another 355 ballots remain to be counted by hand, a spokesman for the secretary of state said. The 257 found Friday afternoon have now been counted.

Hand counts have always been the final arbiter of closely contested elections because they are the most accurate. The problem with the "hanging chad" in punch cards has rendered the card tabulations only about 96% (at best)accurate. In Florida, almost 100,000 people who voted for President have NO vote recorded because of the hanging chad problem.

Putting aside the issue of this now meaningless contest, who thinks their vote shouldn't be counted?

Well Shux, I _LIVE_ in Milwaukee.. our local news caught 2 democratic party members distributing packs of cigarettes to homeless people who agreed to vote absentee for Gore.. and this is not an ACCUSATION either.. they have it ON CAMERA.. One of the people caught is a person who lied about being only a concerned citizen, when in reality they are listed on the Gore webpage as one of their most honored members of the party, since she had given about $400,000 to the democratic party THIS YEAR...

I believe the goal here for Gore is not to win the Florida votes. He's got two strong political plays going for him right now. If he can keep a hand recount going long enough, the votes can not be certified and by the time the electoral college MUST vote, Florida won't/can't be included. AKA Gore wins the electoral college.
If the other option is to win a revote, similar senario. Revote won't take place until December and it will be too late to get the votes certified for December 18. Again Gore wins. At that point, a candidate will only need 257 electoral votes to win. Thus making Florida voters null and void.
The electoral voters must be ready to cast their votes by December 18 or that state forfeits their selction for President. Read up on the Hayes-Tilden election of 1876 and the Electoral Count Act of 1887. There is still the possibilty that congress could reject certain electoral votes. It is in their power to do so. Hasn't been done since the 1876 election but with everything else that is going on, who knows....
I just find it sad all the way around that people can take the time to go vote but then they don't spend the 2 minutes it takes to read directions and actually look at the ballot both when it was posted in the papers for feedback prior to the election and when they actually have it in their hands. I worked a 14 hour day that day with 2 hours of commuting to and from work and I still took my time at the polls.

Bruce Fein, a right wing constitutional lawyer and scholar, has opined that won't happen. He doesn't see Florida letting its vote go uncounted.

Furthermore, it is still possible for Bush to win the Electoral College vote without Florida, so the approach you suggest would be risky at best.

Finally, I realize the right wing thinks that the upper middle class Jewish voters in Palm Beach County are all blue-haired ditzes. As I've said elsewhere on this board: tell that to the Palm Beach County Circuit Court Judge who will be hearing the complaints of 30,000 voters.

Oh yeah we don't have anything to worry about with the Democrats getting their hands on the ballots. They have defined the word "honesty" for the last eight years and I'm sure that they wouldn't think of doing anything now (even with the Republicans peering over their shoulders)- it's just the "Grand Prize" up for grabs. The current administration has gotten away with murder and I honestly believe that they will do anything and everything to change the outcome of this election, legal or not. They bombed Iraq to delay the impeachment vote - do you really think they won't step it up a notch to control the White House, especially with a split Senate (assuming Cantwell wins in Washington) giving more power to the vice president? I am not completely naive to the fact that the Republicans have had their share of "tricks", but when it comes down to it, I can definately see the Democrats "stuffing the ballot box" over the Republicans.

By the way here's the article in regard to the DNC hiring a telemarketing firm to try and help out the Florida voters at 6 PM on election night. I'm sure they were not trying to "stir" anything up, but just looking out for the voters best interest. Obviously the DNC knows that these voters screwed up and just wanted to help them with their memory. I find it pretty remarkable that of the 5000 calls that they made, 2400 of them believe they made a mistake! Democrats call Florida voters
