Long story, a year ago we got dsl, its been problematic since, we loose conections frequently but sbc says the line is fine, the actual service provider says the line is good, but we have nothing out of the ordinary, a router hooked up to three computers. Yesterday I was fed up with the crappy service and called Road Runner. Today I hooked up the cable within 15 minutes of getting home, instead of the couple of hours dsl took. Well now we have both and need to decide what to do.

Here are the speed reports from dslreports.com

Cable 1995/386
DSL 626/108

I know that the dsl will be a constant speed and the cable could fluate, but they seemed nicer on the phone than sbcglobal. I am not under contract with sbc anymore. Can you guys think of any reasons not to ditch the dsl and go with the cable? THanks in advance.

The cable speed could fluctuate, but if they've got a good network your speed will be dependant on their backbone just like dsl. Try it out and see if it does. If its solid then ditch the dsl

Cable fluctuation is one of these ?scary? words that does not mean too much.

Look at your numbers, your DSL is almost third of the Cable. Even if you loose 50% of the Bandwidth (which is very unlikely), you are still ahead.

The Cable performance is not the same in every place. However I am using cable for two years, in very populated place (NYC). Max. fluctuation is 20% down.

Have RoadRunner cable now,
LOL HAHAHAHA test from here,

2.8 megabits per second

Run the test again Discuss in the forum
Details

Your raw speed was 2795352.51 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications

2.8 megabits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet

Storage

341.2 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.

1MB file download

3 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

Rating

Compared to all connection types worldwide, yours is fantastic
my cable is $45 per month my dsl was $49.95
and it was SLOWER
dslreports is cool too!!

Your download speed : 2122420 bps, or 2122 kbps.
A 259 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 329362 bps, or 329 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

I'm in New York also and I've had experiences with both cable and DSL and I would choose cable over DSL any day. I've had to deal with 2 DSL providers going bankrupt, multiple month waits for installation, and bad technical support (Northpoint and Telocity).

Is there any downside to cable, e.g. are there any added security concerns, such as neighbors potentially having access to your computer? We got dsl because cable wasn't available, and it has been very reliable, but I'm open to cheaper and faster options now that cable is finally here.

Yeah, because of the way cable signal is distributes (node sharing), it is more susceptible to local security, i.e. neighbors on your node may stumble upon your files.

However behind a Router, and or Software Firewall (security wise) it is not different then DSL.
