I have been won over - I will own a VW as my next car.

My local dealer is closed today, but they left one of their new GTis unlocked. Being the VW hater I was, I had to size up the competition.
It was red, 18" 5-spoked wheels, with the sunroof package. Looks great in person, I didn't notice any ride height issues. I tugged on the drivers door - low and behold, it was unlocked.

I loved the seats, and the material was decent. Shut the door with a loud *thump*. It was very quiet inside, VW did a great job of isolating outside noise (the dealer also left their ouside music BLARING, couldn't hear any of it in the car). To my surprise, the radio works without the key being in the ignition! I spent about half an hour sitting in every seat, opening every door, touching every button - and I loved it.

I haven't driven one - that'll change tomorrow. I'm not a power freak (as evident by my current car), so I don't think the test drive can do anything by solidify my opinion of the car. I've got abou two years left until I get my degree, and I've decided that the GTi will be my graduation gift to myself once the time comes

<--Hi, I'm Ryan, and I want to own a VW :)

something about them is very appealing. i'd own one too, if given the chance. i think my next car will actually be a Honda though.

unless something domestic catches my eye, or i win the lottery.

A car's reliability is really important for me. I do not want to be stranded on a highway on a dark winter night. I do not want to know the mechanics by their first names or pay for their summer vacations.

How is VW's reliability these days?

If you do not know, I recommend you find out before you buy one.

I want to like VW. I really really really want to LOVE Audi. I just have heard so many long-term reliability horrors from both brands.

likewise

I'd really like a Passat but overall their reliability sucks compared to Honda, Toyota, etc.

I'm 6'5" and drove a '00 Passat GLX for 3 years. I know this car is a little smaller than a passat, but VW's are quite roomy.

Yeah yeah yeah...we have two that are working wonderfully, and mine is approaching 95k with no problems.

VW really screwed up when they decided to manufacture the Jetta/etc in Mexico. Also, instead of bothering with the Phaeton, they should have invested that money in making the other models better.

I'm with Farbio.

We've owned 3 VW's (2000 Jetta, 2001.5 Passat, 2002 Passat)

While they are indeed fun to drive and have some cool designs/features, i will NEVER, EVER, buy another POS VW again............. ever.

I'm in the "I'll never buy a VW" camp because of all the horror stories about reliability and post sale customer disservice that I've heard.

Add me to the camp too. I love how the GTI looks but I am just too scared to own one.

You would have splooged when I saw a car carrier completely filled with the new GTIs a few days ago. I didn't have my camera with me at the time. It would have made a nice picture.

the reliability issues scare me too - Like i said - two years from now I'll be on the market - I'll see how their reliability fares then, and if they've made any changes :) :)

VW treats the US market like sh1t.

They know their products here are crap & refuse to deal with the QC issues.
