Red pcb=yes. Black pcb=no. Of course not all red pcb cards will softmod succesfully. A fair number of people have gotten checkerboarding and other artifacts which is probably due to a damaged pipeline that was unlocked with the softmpod. But if you've got a red one it's defenitely worth trying.

that one, if you get it, should be able to soft mod. It is the ones that are shaped like an L that do not because they are not based on the 9700 PCB, which means they are using their own core, and not just a flipped transitor

Think you should read FuManStan's reply, cause it is the truth, so there isn't any point in even thinking about softmoding your r9500pro into r9700np.

The 9500 Pro is a very fast card still, faster than a Ti4600 when you turn on FSAA/AA...you got a good deal even though you cant softmod.

The card with the L shape memory has 256-bit memory bus, the line memory configuration does not. All the softmod does is open the 4 closed pipelines in the GPU to make it a total of 8. The 9500 Pro already has 8 pipelines and only comes in a version that has a 128-bit memory bus.

yeah, ATI Catalyst is like the Nvidia Detonators.
Download the catalyst 3.2 drivers from the website (get both the driver, and the 'control panel'). You can download Multimedia Centre and Hydravision if you want but you don't need to install those unless you need them.

uninstall any previous video drivers (i usually reboot after this)

install the driver, reboot when prompted
then install 'control panel', reboot as prompted.
then change ur settings to whatever you prefer.

if you play Half-Life (or mods based on half-life engine, i.e. Counter-Strike), then you might want to use Catalyst 3.1 (there's an issue where Half-Life will hard lock the system if you press 'esc'). I play CS and i use the 3.2s anyways cuz the new drivers made the actual game a lot smoother.
