I need to write a 10 page paper on overclocking and I do not know where to start. :( I also don't know much about overclocking. This 10 page paper will become an oral presentation. :(

I need help starting. What should I talk about? What should I take into consideration?

I think you would be better off writing about something that you know about... Is that an option, or is this an assigned topic? If it's an assigned topic, you better start doing some googling ;)

google is your friend ;) try a search for "overclocking guide" or some such. I'm sure somebody out there has a detailed guide on how to overclock. What *exactly* are you going to write the paper about? Is it just a "how-to" or are you going to get into CPU architecture and the history of overclocking and such?

It's a general guide where I have to cover most aspects of overclocking. Advantages/inconveniences, limits, things to take in consideration, etc.

Ok, here's what I would write it on if I were writing it:
I would start with a brief intro on CPUs (explain what a CPU is and how it works, perhaps touch on the different CPU architectures)
I would then progress to a simple explaination of what overclocking is and how one accomplishes it.
Perhaps you could o/c your system and write about the process from beginning to end? What better way to describe how to o/c than to actually do it yourself?
Advantages of o/cing:
(free) speed boost
get more CPU for less money
Disadvantages:
shortened CPU lifespan/possibility of frying a chip
can have sideaffects if not done properly or pushed too hard (data corruption, CPU miscalculations which lead to errors and crashes, etc)

I'm sure you can get 10 pages out of all that...

Hey thanks! I guess I got a pretty good subject compared to others. Some people got keyboards, mice, optic fiber, etc. Haha!

I guess it's "Computing and Networking" in English. I'm actually in Multimedia and the head guy decided that having a course like that would benefit us. It's actually quite retarded... You should see the stupidities they make us do...

whoa a paper/presentation on overclocking..... thats freaking badass!

maybe when i get to college Ill get to do that too....

if you have lots of time/interested people for your presentation, itd be cool if you did a demonstration and brought in a computer and benched-overclocked-benched again in like 15 minutes or something.

youd get an A for effort! hehe..

Well when I try to explain overclocking to my semi-techy friends, I usually start by explaining how CPUs are made and what speed binning is. You can explain why its possible to overclock a chip x% of the time without getting overly technical. From there, you can go into the more technical details and methods.
