I am going into Design next year at York in Toronto and I have a friend who just finished first year there. As expected I would like to get a computer. I have not decided on a system or a notebook. Regardless my friend has offered me his ibook for around 900$. Its a g3 500mhz, the lan in the dorm uses appletalk which is a plus for it. It has everything I need for next year installed. (THIS IS CANADIAN $) I know that macs are renound to be better for graphics but I still like pc's better. What would you suggest, get the ibook or save some more $ and get a laptop at the 2000mhz or a system at 2700?

I don't know much of anything about Macs, but that doesn't seem like a great deal considering you can get a brand new G3 800MHz for around $300 CAD more.

And the days Macs were better at graphics are long past.

Thats an average price for a 500mhz iBook. They go for between $500-$650 on ebay.

I would not get a mac. I can't stand them.

I would get a cheap pc laptop instead.

Put in the extra $300 for a newer iBook. I just got an iBook and find myself using it more and more. Good luck finding a good, reliable, fast, light, cheap PC alternative.

Thanks, my Thinkpad T20 will do just fine for that.

ibooks are awesome,
if you do anything with unix, youll love it. Only people that are clueless about unix and only know windows hate em. I have a g4 800 tower and im loving it,
os 10.2 is the sh!t. The new windows longhorn thats gonna be released in 2005 is trying to copy the features os x had in 2001.

And macs ARE better for graphics, there is no decent windows alternative for mac color and font managment.

Not to mention that macs keep their value way more than pcs...

Macs "keep" their value because they're horribly inflated to begin with. No way am I gonna pay 2000+ for a Mac system when I can get a better PC one for less than $1000. Price gouging does not equal value.

Asking if you should buy a an ibook on this site is like going to the KKKs site and asking if you should marry a black woman.

That said, the price isn't that great and 500mhz is pretty slow (900mhz ibooks are out now). I'd spend the extra money and buy a new one.

A newer iBook will really help you out if you want to go Mac. The slower ones of that generation have hopelessly underpowered video cards that won't run Quartz Extreme (which offloads graphics processing to the video card) so most of your time will be spent waiting for programs to display. Being educational, you can get a good discount on newer iBooks that work much better (I just bought my 900Mhz for a decent price) or you can check out Smalldog.com for good prices on used 800Mhz iBooks that can do everything that you'll need. I'd also consider a Powerbook if you really want to get involved with it.

A lot of universities offer some kind of student discount if they have a computer store, and Apple has some programs for college level students buying their computers. I managed to get my iBook w/ 800mhz g3, combo drive(that's a dvd-player/cd-rw), and 640MB RAM for a little over $1000 after taxes.

I also say you should save your money and get a new iBook right when you start school. That way you get the latest one right when you really need it.
