I'll be starting work in a few weeks, so my bum days will soon be over. I'd like to go somewhere before then, and I was thinking of buying a crap car for a few hundred bucks and driving from Toronto to Panama. See some sights, take some photos, enjoy myself and get away for a while.

Car insurance might be a problem... I don't know how they handle international driving, but apart from that, I might actually do this.

something like this will definitely get me down there... I guess I can fly back from Panama City.

I would never trust a car like that to get me across a country, I say rent a car, but if you pull it off more power to you.

What's the worst that happens? The car dies and he buys a ticket back from Oklahoma City instead of Panama. :shrug;

I wouldn't trust a "few-hundred dollar car" to get me to the next state...

I say go for it! When your in Wisconsin calling home for money to buy a plane ticket back, you can at least say you tried.

Yeah for sure, I'm not saying don't do it, I just think buying a car like that is a waste of time and money.

I say live a little, I would do it. How many miles will your trip be, and what exactly is your price range when you mention "cheap car?"

It would be a 8000km trip roughly speaking. On second thought, it might not be quite possible. While I'm sure most cheap cars can last 8000km, they're all sold "as is" and unless I have a safety and emissions certificates, I can't get insurance. And I don't really feel like driving that much without it.

Why Panama? I think you should drive towards Fairbanks, Alaska. On your way you can experience all the scenic delights the 51st state has to offer.
