I have an ATI AIW 9700 and I get a message when installing the DVD portion of their software that I don't have Directx 8

I am having a bear of a time trying to get the DVD playback feature installed on my machine. It keeps telling me that I do not have directx 8.0 but I am running 9.0. I can install all of the other features but not the DVD player. I would not care too much except I am getting an error when trying to capture video that the DVD player is not installed and then it just hangs.

I downloaded the newest multimedia package and everything but the DVD installs. I tried to download just the DVD install from their site but it asks me to choose my DVD player then tells me it is not an ATI DVD player. I found from the site that you need to install the DVD from your CD first and can then use this as an upgrade but when installing from the CD is when I get the message that I do not have Directx 8.0

I have looked into uninstalling directx, going back to 8, installing the player then updating to 8 but what I found on that looks either problematic or impossible.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

You might try downloading the full-file DX9.0C package, running it to extract the installation files, and install it again, to see if that gets you anywhere. Good luck! :)

I think if I do that I will still get the message when installing ATI's DVD decoder. I'm pretty sure this has something to do with 9.0 not being out when the disk was distributed and the installer sees it as not having what it thinks is the highest version, 8.0

It doesn't appear that you have anything to lose by trying, so think it over.

If your Windows CD is SP1A or has no Service Pack at all, then if your theory is correct, you could reinstall Windows in order to get DirectX 8 status back, get your baseline ATI DVD player installed, then update with Service Pack 2 (which includes DX 9.0C) and carry on.
