I have an A70. I want to take decent shots at sporting events.

My wife attempted to take shots of me racing last weekend. They, not to put too fine a point on it, kinda sucked. Everything was far-away looking and grainy on both the "auto" and "action" settings.

Being the photo-n00b that I am, I have no idea how to go about setting up the A70 to take decent pics of something like a cycling race (outdoors, bright light, fast-moving subject). Are there accessory lenses for the A70, or am I going to have to look into a "real" camera? If so, what camera?

Edumacate me. 🙂

Set the dial to the "fast moving objects" thing (a guy running I think) and snap away 🙂 Or you could manually adjust the settings, but I'm just as big a n00b as you are in that respect.

Tried that. They sucked. Cycling is tricky since you usually can't get very close to the riders and they're usually doing 30mph or so. 😛

I think you'll need to turn off auto-focus in the Menu. Then focus on an area ahead of the cyclist that he will soon pass through and depress the shutter halfway. When the cyclist comes into the frame, fire the shutter.

There's definitely a certain amount of shutter delay to account for, as I think my friend's A70 (or A80, I can't remember) had a similar situation. Though I have an S45, and I hardly notice any shutter delay on mine. Yeah its also a good idea to disable auto-focus and auto-flash as well. Also I don't know if the A70 accepts external zoom lenses, though I assume not.

What is your ISO set at? I'd use manual settings, set the white balance, set the ISO to 50, and take a few test shots to see if they turn out like i'd expect.

oh...and if she can't get closer to take the pic, you'll need either a better camera with a better lens, or a telephoto lens. I have a teleconverter for my G3 and it works pretty good, but it also slows down the shutter speed too (less light gets into the lens). She can also try "panning" with you to get sharper pictures. The grain usually comes from a low ISO and lower setting for the picture quality (normal, fine, superfine).

Are there telephoto lenses for the A70?
