So i'm cleaning out my basement and i just realized that i have mental barrier against throwing away boxes for my electronics, eg monitors, tv's and stuff. they are taking up a huge amount of space and we use our basement regularly as a family room. these boxes are very unsightly and i just can't muster up the will to throw them away.

theres this nagging voice in the back of my head that says "what if you upgrade and want to sell these monitors?" or "what if it breaks and you need to send it in for an rma?" most of my big ticket items in my fs/t threads come with all original packaging and boxes... i think this may have to change for the good of my house :(

does anyone else have this problem? its taking me hours to clean up my basement when it should be taking me less time

i'm nowhere near as bad as the people on those shows. i don't think i'm a compulsive horder because i don't really "collect" things. i just want to keep the boxes so when i do want to get rid of them, i feel they sell faster when all the original packaging is included. these boxes have no sentimental feeling to me, and neither do any of my electronics or pretty much any of my material belongings (besides pictures and personal stuff)

For the past 15 years or so, I've moved every 3-5 years. The best way to move/ship electronics is to use the original factory packaging/styrofoam. Chances are that if you're posting on this website, you're an electronics/computer geek of some kind. I am both...much to the detriment of my wallet.

I have the original box and packing for every piece of electronic gear, camera, PC case, TV, DVD, satellite dish, etc in my house. When I move, packing it up takes just minutes and it gets to the new location in one piece.

Don't throw a damn thing out. You worked hard to buy that stuff, right? Man up and keep it all in perfect working/resale condition.

KEEP IT ALL.

LOL, I'm the same way. I have boxes in the attic and garage (no basement). I figured out how to solve it but I haven't had the time to work on it much. Just cut the tape and flatten the boxes and leave one big box to put the flattened boxes in. Buy some packing tape to keep around and then you are ready in case you need them. I save some of the smaller plain boxes to store stuff.

EDIT: Several people beat me to it. Forgot about the styro though. I guess you could put all the styro in one or two big boxes. Use a black marker to identify which product it goes with. :D

I throw away all the boxes and styrofoam. The styrofoam takes up too much space.

Me too.

I'm just now getting to the point of throwing them out.
But it's difficult -- i keep thinking "this is a perfectly good box... I should be able to use it for something."
Really I just need to throw a ton of stuff out (and donate the decent stuff) -- including the boxes.

yeah man, it's the styrofoam that takes up all the space. i think i am gonna have to reach a medium and flatten the boxes and tuck them under my sofa, all the styrofoam is in the garbage now... about 10 trashbags full :( :( :(
so i guess when i sell something im going to have to just get bubblewrap and use original boxes... good medium i guess

i also keep *some* shipping boxes from newegg. they are perfectly good boxes and i reuse them all the time for shipping stuff. gahhhh *head asplodes*

I keep all boxes. Even boxes from the shit I buy on fleabay, the outer boxes of stuff shipped from online stores (I still have a box from when I bought a nerf rifle from Amazon. It's omgwtf huge.), never know when you'll need them to ship something - my dad lives in Alaska right now and my family and I are always shipping him stuff.

I have this problem to some extent as well.

Like I got my 32" LCD for the Master Bedroom a few months ago and put the box up in the attic rather than just throwing it away.
