hey everyone.. i've tried installing a copy of windows xp pro corporate ed. every way i know how.. i've tried it clean on a formatted hard drive, i've tried it from a win98 upgrade.. i got nothing. each time the xp installer either restarts the computer to begin installation directly after the bios boot screen, or boots directly from the cdrom to initialize a new installation, i get the same error:

"File \$WIN_NT$.~BT\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded.
The error code is 4. (sometimes it says it's error code 7)
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit."

i've visited the ms website with high hopes of an actual answer to my problem, and i found several possible solutions, none of which have worked... these include copying the "I386" directory and running the install from that, pressing "f7" to disable the advanced functions in the initial install, and trying "again to work from a clean install."

i'm running an MSI mainboard with a p4 2.4 ghz cpu, geforce2 agp, toshiba dvdrom, tdk drd+rw, and 80 gb maxtor 7200.

any solutions?

thanks in advance..

Perhaps the CD is bad. I had a similar problem once and switching to a different CD solved it.

Not familiar with that specific error message, but is this a new build? I just did an error filled install of XP on a new system and afterwards ram Memtest. Bad ram. Got an RMA going with newegg now.

the problem isn't the cd.. a friend of mine used it to install xp on two of his systems without a hitch.

Have you tried a different cdrom drive? Even if it's new that doen't mean it couldn't have problems.

hi,
try downloading memtest or docmemory. either will allow you to run from a boot floppy and test your memory. this could be the problem, like boomerang said. (and he's not as lazy as i am and gave you the link)

thanks everybody. i did several different things at once, but i'm pretty sure it was the dvd drive that was screwing up the install.

xp is up and working fine.
