Use push/manual mower. Shut up and let me sleep in past 7am and shut up let me have dinner in peace. Wish I said that to my 3 doors down neighbour who uses a leaf blower to blow dry his brick yard. Oh, and his dog won't shut up, especially in the morning.

Reel mowers don't edge for crap. They're also no good if you have a lot of weeds in your yard and you get a lot of different lengths. Let it get too long and you're in trouble. But they're good exercise and environmentally sound. See if you can find one used and try it out.

Edit: After mowing my yard today, I remembered that reel mowers don't mulch. I LOVE mulching mowers. No clippings, better for the environment. Get a mulching mower.

my grandpa has a push mower, for a yard about 20 feet by 15 feet. it seems to work for him.

the blades sharpen themselves, since they pass along a sharpening stone during their rotation...maintenence is pretty much non-existent on them. and his has worked for at least 40 years now...

To me, it's always seemed that the old mowers were of a much higher quality and lasted longer, with less maintenance.

parents made me use a push, god that sucked. wasn't very effecitve, atleast the one i had. think it was because the blades didn't really spin all that fast, and if you pushed it hard enough to spin quickly you covered too much ground too quickly. longer weeds/grass just didn't cut:(

I bought a Black and Decker electric and I am quite happy with it's performance. Just how small is your yard? How many feet between your and the neighbors (how wide is the side)? Can you post pictures?

It actually works quite well. Very well. Highly recommended.

I don't recall what it is, but it's battery powered and very eco friendly. Surprisingly it is a "green" color.

-edit-
I think she also gets a tax cut because of it.

A corded mower will have more power and a near infinate run time. Plus you don't have to replace the battery every few years which can be very expensive. Just make sure you get a 10AWG extension cord that's at minimum of 50 feet. Anything thinner than that and you will notice a lack of torque (trust me) risk burning the motor. I used a 50Foot 16AWG then switched to my 25 Foot 10AWG and could really notice a difference in a cooler motor with more cutting power.

(i know someone will try to debate that)

If you want to avoid being a polluter, buy a push mower. If you are really concerned about the environment, write your senator/congressman and tell them to focus on nuclear energy solutions.
It's still more efficient than a small 2-stroke gasoline engine. At least that way, the energy is produced in a slightly more efficient manner, all in one place.

I would favor more nuclear power though, as well as the use of breeder reactors to minimize the waste produced, as well as allow for the extraction of as much energy as possible from a given quantity of uranium.

We need more fusion research too. Fusion is the future.

Exactly how small is this yard? What are its approximate dimensions in feet?

Just wear a black hooded cape and use a sickle. The looks you'll get from your neighbors will be priceless (at least until the police show up) :p

Push reels suck. You need to keep the blades very sharp for them to actually cut anything.

Electric should be fine.

Why do you want to push me? :( I did nothing to offend you and I apologize if so. Buy an electric mower instead of pushing me. :(
