You have no Idea what a pain a manual reel is. It's fine at first, but soon it will dull and its not easy to sharpen the blades. Trust me, it blows.

hmm i am leaning toward electric then. i had a gas mower before when i had a much bigger yard. but for a small yard i will try to avoid being a polluter.

And for those who suggested i get an animal well. i dont want to pick up crap and i dont have a fence:)

Tie it to a chain cut to the length of the radius of your yard, it should get most of it and won't leave your yard. Attach a bag on the end so the crap falls into a bag.

Why do you think your electricity is clean energy? The vast majority of electricity produced in this country is from fossil fuel production plants. If you want to avoid being a polluter, buy a push mower. If you are really concerned about the environment, write your senator/congressman and tell them to focus on nuclear energy solutions.

Or just leave it alone and eventually a neighbor will do it for you out of pity.

I can't believe some of the sub-moronic suggestions I'm reading here. Everyone knows the proper way to cut a lawn is with nail clippers and a ruler. Idgits!

I used a reel mower on my small yard and it worked great as long as you keep your lawn mowed. I had to adjust the blades on occasion (probably what most people fail to do, which is why they think they are a PITA), but I only had to sharpen it a couple times in several years, which was no big deal (break it down a little...spread compound...attach a crank....crank reels backward)

I have had every kind of mower imaginable and for a small yard you can?t beat an electric. Push mowers can cost a lot more and require maintenance to keep them at peak. For an electric all you have to do is keep the cord away from the blades and sharpen the blades occasionally.

Pay some enterprising neighbor boy to keep it mowed for you. He supplies the mower (his parents').

Have him weed the border around it too.

My girl has an electric mower (battery)

It actually works quite well. Very well. Highly recommended.

I don't recall what it is, but it's battery powered and very eco friendly. Surprisingly it is a "green" color.

-edit-
I think she also gets a tax cut because of it.

I use a 18" electric on a .25 acre lot. Works ok. I rather have one with a battery in some spots but for the most part its easy and very quiet.

For a small lawn a push mower works great. The first cut of the season is difficult with a push mower, but the sub sequence interval isn't hard if you keep the grass well trim (short).

IMHO, an electric mower is a good choice for small lawn because it is relatively quiet/no smell/no fuel and doesn't require as much maintenance as gas mower.

When I was between 11 and 15 or so I used a manual push mower to mow our lawn because my father was cheap. He paid me $2 to do it and our yard is pretty big back and front and sides.

I own and use both on my 4/10ths acre and they're both fine. If you have say under a tenth or 2/10ths acre and mow regularly I'd say a push reel is a no-brainer, the electric is kinda nice for larger yards and if you like to let the grass get a bit longer.

Whoever says a push reel mower is hard to use obviously hasn't used one very much. The only downside they have is that it's easy to bind them up (say if an acorn gets trapped in between the blades and frame). They are kinda expensive if you buy one new at Lowes or Home Depot, but it's not hard to find them at yard sales for dirt cheap.

The electric will additionally generate quite a few questions from your neighbors (they're still uncommon in my area at least), and don't be surprised if someone asks you why you're vacuuming your grass (that's what it looks/sounds like to people who have never seen one in action I guess).
