The SCSI controller i am getting is a PCI Express 4X card. But most mobos only have 1X or 16X slots. Can i use the 4X card in the 1X slot?

No you can't. You can use a x4 card in a x16 slot (so maybe a SLI / X fire board?) but not a x16 in a x8 etc. Some boards have x4 slots, i know mine does (A8N32 SLI).

Be careful about the motherboard as well. I was doing research on this (I'm getting a Areca PCIe 8X card), and the Asus motherboards won't support anything but graphics cards in the x16 slots. So you can't necessarily grab a SLI mobo and put a graphics card in one, and a RAID card in the other.

Some of the SAS raid controllers fit right at home in PCIe, stuffed with SAS drives PCIe is a nice thing.
