I have a troubleshooting question for somebody who has a USB 2.0 external CD enclosure.

I bought a USB 2.0 enclosure for my CDRW. When I installed the drive, and powered it up, the power light came on, but the drive would not open or close, and it was not detected by the Desktop. I tried different Slave/Master/CS settings, but it didn't matter; the drive still didn't work.

Next, I tried a different CD drive, but had the same results, same with a DVD-RAM drive. If the internal IDE cable is connected to the CD drive, it will not power up, and the tray will not open or close. If the internal IDE cable is removed, and the enclosure is powered up, the drives will spin up like normal, and the tray will open and close. I replaced the IDE cable, but it didn't help. The same thing happened when I tried a harddrive. When the IDE cable was attached, the drive would not even spin up, but it would if powered up with the cable off.

Is the enclosure broken, or am I overlooking something important here?

Please reply with suggestions or PM me.

Thanks,

No, I didn't know I needed one. Even if it isn't plugged into the USB, shouldn't the drive power up and eject a CD? I have XP, shouldn't this be Plug N Play?

My external was detected as a regular usb drive until I downloaded new drivers and installed them right. wouldn't work right, works like a charm now. I dont know if it would eject or not if not plugged into the usb, never tried that, but it would eject with it plugged into the usb.
This was after I installed xp pro, on 98se it always worked with the original drivers

Its draws power from the USB port, so no, it may not power up or eject a CD
(would depend on the enclosure itself).

This one has an external power supply, and does not draw power from the USB port.

In general, If your drive is powered externally, and is not plugged into the USB port, can you open/eject the disk?
