I have a Ti4200...what would be the next step up?

I have a GeForce Ti4200 and looking to go just one more step up. Any suggestions?

Don't say stuff like 'get the Ti4600'. I open to other manufacturers, too. (ATI....)

Yes, the fx5600 offers DX9 but runs it too slow to be playable. The 9600 pro offers DX9 but is still a bit slow, especially for what you'd pay. A 9800 np will offer a decent speed jump and let you play DX9 games with real DX9 rendering.

ATI also claims the 9600xt will be fast (close to 9800 np stock speed) but it's not out until next month.

I think the minimum you should be looking at upgrading to is a 9800np. Anything less is kind of a waste, imo.

Same thing. I am extremely skeptical that ATI's claim that the 9600XT will be equal to the 9700 Pro is true.

I'd say the next logical step for you BustaBust would be an ATI Radeon 9700 or 9700 Pro, or a Radeon 9800 or 9800 Pro.

9600XT benchies show it to be slower than a 9700 NON pro

Well not really shocked, ATI PR folks telling Anand it's faster wasn't enough to convince me, hence the "ATI claims"

Given that, I'd only recommend a 9800 non-pro / pro for a noticeable difference from the ti4200.
 
I think a Radeon 9700 is the minimum upgrade for a significant overall improvement, though a 9800 will probably be easier to find.
 
You´d better wait. A Ti4200 is enough for today´s games, and you will get better bang for the buck if you wait. If you can´t wait, a 9600/9800 will be a good step.

i think anand was just talking out his ass there, i highly doubt ati ever made such a claim.
 
Someone emailed ATi and they said that the 9600XT WOULD NOT be as fast as the 9700Pro.

If you can wait until Monday, I can tell you if the 9800 is a good upgrade.

I have a Ti4400 at 300/600, and shoul dhave a 9800 non-pro by Monday.
I think the 9800non-pro is the only worthwhile upgrade (hence why it's the step I made).

That's what I was going to say! I just swapped out a Ti4200 for an ATI 9800np flashed to a Pro last month. It is a great card, but if you can stand to wait (I couldn't 🙂), I'd hold out until there are DX9 games out and check card availability and prices then.

 
Next step up on a Ti4200 card would be to just over clock it to 4600 speed, I am still running a Ti4200 in my main computer and a ATI 9700 Pro in my backup, On 3DMark the 4200 hits 12, something and the 9700 Pro hits 15,000 but has a bigger processor, What I use them for I can't see 5 cents diff in the two, But I don't play a lot of games either
 
I downgraded from 9800 flashed Pro to 9100. All my games like BF1942, Vice City, Jedi Academy, Medal of Honor, and RTCW still plays perfectly fine at 1024x760. I can't run with AA and AF like I could with 9800 Pro but that's not really that important to me.

Sure games like Halo runs little choppy on 9100 but it ran choppy on my 9800 Pro too. If I run it at 800x600, it runs smooth and plays much better than my 9800 Pro did at 1024x768.

I really think that todays card like 5900 Ultra and 9800 Pro are overkill for older Direct 8x games yet too slow for just released or upcoming Direct 9x games. Thing is my 9100 plays older Direct 8x games just as well as 9800 Pro without AA/AF. Who cares about Direct 9x games when neither card really runs it that well.

I put the money from my 9800 flashed Pro sale aside and will wait on upgrading until true need arises, and I can't play the game I want with my current card. Ti4200 is slightly faster card than my 9100 so it should have no problem playing your favorite games.
 
Why not wait? The ti4200 is still a great card. Just oc the hell out of it and it should hold you over for the 5700 to come out and the 9600 XT/9600 AIW to come out (not just a paper launch). Who knows maybe volari will actually have something out by then too... although i doubt it.
 
Don't buy a card for the future. Games of the future will run like crap on today's hardware... so if you aren't happy with the performance in your current games, look at the reviews here and on another sites and find out what card will make you happy.
