Alright, so I have a Sony PCV-RX463DS with POS Windows ME installed and I want to upgrade to Windows XP. I want to do a clean install of Windows XP, since that would be best, right? But then the Sony website recommends that I clean install Windows ME from the recovery CD, then do all these software changes via patches, then upgrade to Windows XP. That sounds a little excessive and I wonder if it's really necessary?

I don't really care for all the preinstalled programs that came with it, I just want Windows XP on it. So what I'm asking is, on these systems from OEM manufacturer's, do you really need to do an upgrade or will everything be fine with a clean install of XP? Thanks!

I would just reformat and do a clean install, way fewer headaches down the road.

Clean format and install XP..

UNLESS, you need the software that was originally installed with ME, and cannot obtain it anywhere other than the recovery cd.

So a clean install of Win XP will be fine? Why does the Sony website recommend that we do an upgrade from the factory installed OS?

Probably because they don't expect to get people who know what they're doing ;)

Its because some people will freak out if they get a message they've never seen and will straight call up tech support.
