I have a single core Opty running @ 2.85Ghz. I also own an EVGA 7900GT 256MB Signature SeriDX10 8800GTS or 7950 512MB???

I have a single core Opty running @ 2.85Ghz. I also own an EVGA 7900GT 256MB Signature Series videocard. I have the option of paying 150 dollars and trading in my 7900GT SS for an EVGA 8800GTS 320MB Superclocked videocard OR trading in my 7900GT SS for a EVGA 7950 512MB which runs as fast as my SS except it has double the vram, for free of charge. I would buy a dual core Opty if I were to upgrade my SS to a 7950 512MB btw. What would you do if you were in my position???

You'll likely not see a big boost going from 256 to 512. If it were me, Id throw out the $150 and go with the GTS. Now that would be a real nice boost in performance. But...thats me.

Is the GTS from a friend or somthing ? Or would it be stepup? Which I doubt due to the age of the GT.

The trade would be through a friend. Btw, would my single core opty hold back that GTS? I'll mostly be running games @ a resolution of 1024x768 since I own a 17" CRT. Would my SS get the job done better than a 7950 512MB since it's currently running @ 700/1800? Thanks.

I think it's fair to say that 7900GT card is fairly sufficient even for today's games for 1024x768 resolution. At such low resolution you'd be largely cpu limited. I'd rather invest that $150 into a nicer monitor because 1024x768 is 1998 resolution. I was playing at 1600x1200 in 2001! Also, are you finding that the games you play are choppy? (Choice of games will determine bottleneck as well - ie. FEAR - GPU, Supreme commander - single core CPU). Obviously trading in your card for a card with similar clock speeds and double the ram for free is a no brainer. But it seems rather pointless to spend extra $ if you are happy with the performance. I suppose if you want to play Crysis of BioShock at 1024x768 8AA/16AF, I could somehow justify purchasing 8800GTS. However, that 17 inch CRT is way overdue for a replacement ;)
