Ok, I have this computer:
ECS K7S5A
ATI Xpert 2000 Pro
Creative Labs Modem Blaster
128 Megs of RAM
Duron 750
XP Home
Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB

It would boot to the desktop, there would be a little square around all the icons and cursor, start menu and such, filled with little red lines. I thought this was the motherboard, but I RMA'd it, and it still does it. I replaced the ATI Card with my GF3, still does it. Replaced moniter. Still. Now here are my theroys:
1. Somewhere the motherboard is touching the case
2. Bad PSU

Anyone have any ideas? My dad is flipping out on me becasue of this....... its his dads computer, and I'm supposed to be building it for him. I need some help... thanks

What OS are you using?

Have you tried reformatting/reinstalling?

Did you have any problem with the install?

Whats so bad about the K7S5A? I have built 5 systems with it with no problems at all.

Nothing, it itself - I've built systems on it, too. But that is a rather unfortunate collection of components. Putting last-generation components together with Windows XP and an ECS/Duron combo is risky. Probably any one or two of those components wouldn't be a problem, but when you start adding up all those small probabilities...

Do you have Windows 2000 available? It might be more compatible than XP.

Did you check that link that NesuD provided? It looks like that might be your problem -- the Barracuda is a UDMA 100, right?

Viper.....I can tell you this much, that's a video card driver issue............I haven't used an Xpert in like forever........are XP drivers even available for it or are those 2K drivers? My advice........download all the drivers that may possibly work and try them all! Are there any conflicts in Device manager????

Those are XP drivers. And its done the same thing on a Xpert, GF2, and a VooDoo 3, AGP/AGP and PCI, respetivly. No conflicts in teh device manager.

You tried a different stick of RAM? If you have 2 stick try them one at a time.

OK........What about P/S then???? What is it and have tried swapping them???? Was going to mention RAM also......but, seeing as you have 128mb, I assume that it is a single stick right???? If not, I agree........try only one stick..........

Its a single stick, and I've tried a different stick of SDR, and one of my own DDR sticks. Nothing

I tried swapping PSUs too, same thing. Its an Emermax 350W, though I'm not sure on the wattage. Tommarow I'm getting another K7S5A-based system that works reasonably well, and I'm going to put the whole damn rig on that board. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Until then, any siggestions?

Have you tried booting with just the video card? Taking out the modem and disabling the LAN/Sound?????

This has nothing do to with motherboard, RAM, hard drive, PSU, etc...

It is one of the following:
Video Card / Video Card Drivers
Monitor / Monitor's Refresh Rate
VGA Monitor Cable

Since you've already tried different video cards, that's pretty much eliminates the video card issue. Have you tried different monitor or running your monitor at different refresh rate and different resolution? What about monitor cable? Are you using BNC or VGA? Have you tried different one?

your problem surely seems to be that last generation mobo.change it and see if it works.also check the drivers for your video cards
