This one really sucks. it's got the registry screwed up to where i can't install any spyware programs, spybot or microsoft antispyware, it says .dll's won't register.

anyone have any good ideas?

btw, i've already taken the hd out of the system and ran antivirus and spybot, adaware, ms antispyware on it.

1) take the hard drive out of the computer, put it in a healthy computer as a slave, and do an antivirus scan using some current-generation antivirus and anti-spyware software or some free online scans (see left side of AntiSource.com, they have a list).

2) After the scan, back up her data.

I made a plan for a guy in this thread that you might look at, if you have the patience for it: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=32&threadid=1552903

the registry is screwed up to the point where it won't allow me to uninstall the copy of MS Antispyware that i have installed. the reason for uninstalling it? it won't run without erroring out.

i also uninstalled spybot just in case so that i could reinstall it with a fresh copy (they had spybot on their before). when i went to reinstall it, it errored out again, due to inability to register dll's.

YHPM and I would really strongly consider just rescuing her data and then vaporizing that Windows installation :) but otherwise give my crAzy 20-stage plan a try.

Ad-Aware and Spybot don't need to be installed on the target machine.

Install them on your own PC, and then simply copy their respective directories from Program Files, onto the client machine. Run them from there. :)
