I have a P4 550 That is WAY TOO HOT!

Hey everyone! I have a little problem and I have No idea who to ask....

When I tried to install a "Thermaltake Silent 775 CL-P0092" instead of my stock Intel cooler I found out it was incompatible. There was not at all enough contact between the Fan/can. So I was forced to put back my stock Intel cooler.

Now its cooling is worse than ever. I tried re-installing it only to gain very little. It goes up to 70 degrees C on load, I don't even sure it anymore for fear of permanent damage.

I need a really good cooling device, I'm willing to spend up to 120$ (around there). I would preferably like the bottom of the heat sink to be circular (like the stock Intel cooler) because I think that's what would have best Contact.

I was looking at the Zalman: "Fatal1ty FS-C77" or "CNPS7700-Cu"

I use silver thermal paste, its a P4 550 @ 3.4 GHz on an Abit AA8 DURAMAX-LGA 775 mobo all inside a Cooler Master "Wave Master" Case.

If theres any other info you need just ask...

Thanks for any replies, I really have to get this thing TIP TOP again (I miss HL2&CSS!)

The shape of the base doesn't matter, as long as it's flat and relatively well-finished. Any heatsink from the good manufacturers will satisfy those requirements.
There was not at all enough contact between the Fan/can
Could you explain this in different words?

Between the heatsink and proc Its obvious there is not enough contact. I tried different amounts of thermal paste only to get minimal temperature decrease. I need a strong cooler that doesnt make as much noise as the pathetic stock Intel cooler (not more than 120$).

you used arctic silver 5 i assume? If so make sure you used 1/3 of a BB sized dot in the center. if you put too much it WILL hurt performance

Wow dude $120 is a ton of money to spend on cooling if you want to go air. I say just get a Zalman CNPS9500. It's rather expensive for a heatsink but I guess that's not an issue for you. It looks cool and works well. I hear the Artic Cooler 64 or whatever its called is good too.

Yea arctic silver 5, I used that exact amount, although I don't see how too much thermal paste would affect performance negatively.

When I say $120 that includes water coolers, for a classic heatsink and fan I wouldn't expect to pay any more than $60.

The Zalman CNPS9500 seems HUGE, I noticed you have one installed in your system, does it perform well? Isn't It really heavy? Is it hard to install? How much do they cost? Is there anything that I might want to know before buying one? Does it include the Fan or is it simply a heatsink? Is it Quiet?

I was thinking more along the lines of a Fatal1ty FS-C77, the CNPS9500 looks like its gunna fall out of the mobo but if its significantly better perfoming then I guess Its an option to consider. I hate stock intel coolers!

The CNPS 9500 would be a good choice and will completly out perform the FS-C77. Also check out the SI or XP-90; I would try this Delta for a fan.

Yeah it is big but it's dwarfed by the inside of my P180 case. The temperature in the room is about 27C and my Pentium D is at 48C. This is with the fan only running at 1700rpm so its a lot quieter than full speed (2600RPM). I have my top exhaust fan feeding it cool air though, it was a couple degrees higher when I had both exhaust fans blowing out. To install it you will have to take out your motherboard so that might be hassle. It costs around $65.

FYI, the 9500 looks huge, but in reality it's smaller and MUCH lighter than the 7700 or the Fatality. Just something to keep in mind.

Lowered my P4 3.0E temps 10c from a 7000AlCu.

EDIT: Also check your case temps. You may have unplugged one of your case fans when you took it apart last time. I'm mentioning this since it's strange that your temps went up when you took apart your case.

Hmmm, thinking about it, I do remember reading something about the 775 socket having some issues with mounting heatsinks. The lever system that they have doesn't always sit flush with the processor die. Try to take out your chip and remount, checking that you have a flat surface. I'll try to find that article.

Here's the article (or the page from it). Look about halfway down the page and keep reading to the next page.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/5-cool_12.html

"The pressure comes from the lever (in the top left of the snapshot). The frame is asymmetrical ? its left part is wider, so the lever presses on the left part of the processor (in the given view)...."

"You can see that the processor has a noticeable tilt to the left! It is not positioned strictly horizontally! The cooler is supposed to press down the contacts on the right, too, but what if it doesn?t do so?..."

Wow I was sure the 7700 and fatal1ty were lighter than the 9500, 530g to 930g!!!

So you think a 9500 would do the trick considering my configuration?

Yeah, looking at pictures they don't seem that big, but both the Fat. and the 7700 are about the size of your whole hand.

9500 should be fine, also read through some of the stickied reviews at the top of this topic. Also read that full article that I linked to.

OK baught and installed it. 1st time I put it on just 2 to see how much contact It was getting (CPU/fan) and it was really bad. Second time I put on more paste and installed it. I didnt notice any difference w/ or w/out fanmate, is there some software? When I turn it on I get 56 degrees C and on load it goes up to 58 C (on average). It's better than the stock intel cooler (w/ overheated when I ran HL2, over 70 C!!) but I was hoping to get to the mid 40s on idle and early 50s on load. Its much quieter than the intel cooler and doesnt vibrate. Also I noticed the temperature in my case drop 1-2 C (from 30 to 28C, It's paralell to the rear exhaust fan so I assume they complement each other. It also looks really cool and it is quite big. Installation wasn't hard, just long.

Does anyone know if Arctic Silver 5 is better than what they give you w/ the CSN9500?

All in all a good buy, thanks every1!

AS5 should only buy you another 1 or 2C. If you're case has poor airflow, then an expensive cooler isn't going to help. I prefer the Antec SLK300B case and the Zalman 7700Cu cooler. This big cooler will also blow into your RAM and other components on your MB.

My 550 ran extermely hot as well, and was throttling with an XP-120, however, with a thermaltake jungle 512, brought my load temps down to the mid 60's so it wasn't throttling anymore.

the scythe ninja has my P4 3.2 @ 3.5 idling at about 35-40 depends on the weather outside (i keep my small dorm room window open to get some airflow in room. the ninja is right next to my 1500rpm ADDA fan and attached to the ninja is a 1000rpm nexus siilent fan. at load i hit about 50-55C but it quickly drops down once i stop playing games or whatnot. i highly recommend it over the overpriced zalman which only uses a 92mm fan which is louder at stock and if u turn down the fan it doesn't cool as well

I'd suggest a SI-120
SI-120 + P4 650 at 4.06 + Nexus silent fan + P180 stuffed with more Nexus's = 29 at idle and 52 at load for me.

12c drop at load is nothing to shake a stick at. Yes, still seems hot, but definitely much better. I don't think any other heatsink is going to give you much of a change.

Make sure you read the link I posted earlier and check out your mounting so that the chip is flat in the socket.

Well this new 9500 is really impressive ive gone down 10-15C but overall this CPU is insanely hot.

What temperature would you guys say is too much for a P4 550 (3.4Ghz)?
