I have a new wireless card on my desktop and it drops constantly

I have a blazing fast connection, but it seems to drop for a few seconds almost every minute. What should I do to fix this?

I have a Netgear WG311 v2 card and have installed just the new XP driver w/o the utility.

Try using the utility to see if is still happening. What router/AP are you using? Why not wire your desktop instead of wireless?

A few seconds every minute? That's exactly what mine did until I ran across the fix:
In the control panel-> administrative tools-> services dialog, near the bottom is Wireless Zero Config service. Once you're connected, stop that service.
It's a Windows "feature" that looks for new networks every so often. You know, in case your old one blows up or you like putting up new access points in increasingly better locations every minute or two.

I forgot to ask if you're using encryption. If so, you have to make sure that the "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication" box is NOT checked.

mwild, your reading comprehension is impeccible, you actually posted here 17045 times? Whats your router/AP! Also why didnt you install the utility?

The router is a Dell Truemobile 1184.

The PC card is a netgear WG311 v2

WEP is enabled.

IEEE 802.1x is NOT checked.

Saw a situation like this caused by router firmware. Have you been to the hardware manufacturer's sites for updates, faq's, forums?

Turning off Wireless Zero Config service -not good advice.

If you use another utility, it is good advice. If you use the Windows utility, then keep it enabled.

Someone else suggested that I disable this function as well. It did NOT help, it helped for a few minutes then the disconnects started happening again.

If you two say it is a bad idea, any ideas how to resolve the problem of a wireless connection getting disconnected every minute?

PS: happened with various wireless routers (DLINK DI624/Netgear MR814/Netgear Super 108). same laptop computer with netgear pcmcia wireless adapter (several b & g devices).
