What i have:
NEC 3500A
Lite-On DVD

Need to replace the Lite-On, should i just get another Burner or just a DVD rom drive?

EDIT:
Reason:
I'm having issues with the Lite-On reading/ripping of cd and dvd media. I am unable to burn disk to disk.

System:
Epox 8RDA+
Athlon Xp 1400
2 x 256 Munchin
GeForct 3 Ti 200
NEC 3500A
Lite On DVD 16X
WD 80GB 8MB
Antec case black
Haugeppauge PVR 350
Onboard sound

Thanks,

Can you explain a little more about your issues? Is the drive picky about media? Have you checked to make sure it's running in UMDA-2 and not PIO mode?

As for a second drive, I would suggest a plain DVD-ROM unless you do a lot of burning.

I would recommend this DVD-ROM

Don't be fooled by the so-so rating. I have this drive myself and love it.

Yes, that is my issue. I do burn a lot but i dont like the fact of having the same drive manufacture for all my optical drives incase they are unable to ready a certian [style] of media.

There is nothing wrong with my NEC burner, i want to replace my Lite-on drive. Its getting old (2.5 years) and it seems to be picky about ripping/ reading dvd's

Perhaps a Lite-On combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive? You could use it with K-Probe to check disc quality (although not as good as a Lite-On DVD writer, according to reports), and at the same time, use the CD-RW portion to read/write discs that may require "correct EFM encoding", as it is known that the Lite-On CD-RWs (with the MediaTek chipset) handle this well. You could also scan your CD-R disc quality too, using CDDoctor or similar. Plus, the NEC DVD has rip-lock, so unless you use hacked 3rd-party firmware to remove it, the Lite-On would be able to rip DVDs faster too.
